I am trying to identify the reprints of 1954-58 of many of the series from 1945-54, which differ in size, colour or raster shape.

There is little information on this in the standard catalogues. My source is the German "Spezialkatalog R.S.F.S.R. und U.d.S.S.R. 1918-1960" by Rolf Weinbrecht (1995)

Unfortunately, this catalogue has several misprints and errors.

The 16 stamp series of Russian scientists (1951, Scott 1568-83, Michel 1575-90) was reprinted in 1956 and 9 stamps also in 1957. The 1957 printing is easily identified since it has "horiziontal rasters".

But the first two both have square rasters, Most of these stamps are around 1 mm larger in the original printing.

However, for 3 of the stamps (Stoletow, Kovalevski, Kurnakow) Weinbrect states that the original printing is SMALLER than the 2. printing. I suspect this is wrong.

Can anybody confirm my suspicion? (For the last two of these stamps, all my 6 copies of each are of the "small" type Sad )

(Raster Printing: White diagonal lines divide the picture into small spots. If the lines cross at a right angle these spots are equally wide and high (Square raster). But sometimes the spots are wider than high (Horizntal raster) or are higher than wide (Vertical raster). In most cases (but not always) this is easily seen if you have a good magnifying glass.)

re: Russian Scientists 1951 - printings

Thank you very much for the table. I already had the article you have cited, but for some reason the table was not included in my copy.

It confirms that the sizes given by Weinbrecht are wrong for some of the stamps.

The 3. printing is said to be "a very limited issue and stamps of this printing are difficult to find"

I must have been lucky to find 24 of the 3. printing among my 92 stamps of this series then!

And I only need 2 from the first printing to complete the collection of these stampsHappy
