I have just bought this cover, sent to the German British Zone in 1948, which has been underpaid. It has a Nachgebühr (postage due) marking, a manuscript '10' in crayon but has an instructional marking of which I'm not sure of.

The text is ungenügend Freigang. The best translation I can come up with is: insufficient clearance. Is this just another way of saying 'insufficient postage'?

Can anyone confirm this?

It is underinked and should read: ungenügend freigemacht -- insufficient franking.
