Just added this one to my Panama collection. It is the 1867 1 Shilling Green of Great Britain used in Panama (C35 killer). As explained by F. E. Heydon, in The Stamps of Panama, " ... the internal business of the country has been almost negligible in amount, while the postal requirements of the far more important transit trade were met ... by the far-reaching efficiency of the British postal service. No special stamps were employed for the purpose, the ordinary British issues being used, which may be recognized by the cancellations."

The C35 can be found on 46 different GB stamps (not counting various plate numbers), from 1863 to 1885. The use of British stamps ceased as Panama's postal service increased in efficiency.

re: Great Britain Used in Panama

Nigel, I do not have an SG catalogue; perhaps you can help me with the SG #. I would think that Z103 refers to this stamp specifically with the Panama cancel, C35. However, on looking up further references online, I saw an example for Puerto Rico, with C61, also designated Z103. Does the Z# only refer to that stamp with any "used abroad" cancel?

In the two examples you mention, the Z103 does indeed refer to the same stamp for both Panama and Porto Rico. However, Z103 for Paita in Peru (using C 43), refers to the 1876 3d rose (plate Nos. 17, 18, 19).

Some Z designations are common to more than one place; others not. So this assumption can't always be relied upon.

SG's Z numbers are assigned separately for each country that GB stamps were used in.

Within each country they are grouped first by location then by cancellation and then generally in order by face value and issue date. I say "generally" as in some cases later issues are listed after the main run in face value order.

So for GB stamps used in Colombia (which at the time included Panama):

SG Z1 - Z44 are for stamps used in Carthagena.

Of these, SG Z1 - Z21 have the "C 56" cancellation and SG Z22 - 44 have the "C 65" cancellation.

SG Z45 - Z70 are for stamps used in Colon.

SG Z71 - Z112 are for stamps used in Panama.

SG Z113 - Z128 are for stamps used in Santa Martha.

SG Z129 - Z147 are for stamps used in Savanilla (Barranquilla).

I have to disagree with Ningpo about his Porto Rico example.

For GB used in San Juan in Port Rico SG Z103 is the 1865 1/- green Plate 4 and the corresponding stamp to this one is listed as SG Z104.

It's just an accident that they are this close as the catalogue lists Z numbers for Porto Rico for another five locations before starting with Z82 for San Juan.

Yes, my mistake. Nigelc is correct.
