Hi Everyone,
I have made a small change as a trial to see if it is useful or not. At the bottom of every screen you will see a dropdown that says "Select Language". Select a language that you would like to see the Stamporama screens presented in and hey presto, everything is converted to that language.

This is a facility that is made available by Google. I'm very interested in your feedback on this. Please let me know if it causes any problems and I'll take it out immediately. Also, please let me know if you find this useful or not. Also, if you have a strong feeling either way as to whether I should keep this or not.

Regards ... Tim.

Very nice - and if you translate back from Portuguese to English using Google the translation is verbatim.

If you translate back with Systran the translation is more what I would expect:

"Oi to all,
I made a small change as a test to see I am myself useful or not. In the inferior part of each screen, you he will see a suspended list that says “To select idiom”. He selects an idiom that you would like to see the Stamporama screens presented and voilá, everything is converted for this idiom. This is an easiness that is made available by the Google.Estou very interested in its commentaries on this subject. Please, it leaves me knowledge if it cause some problem and I goes to take it immediately. Moreover, please it informs if you to me to find this useful one or not. Moreover, if you have a strong feeling in any way for knowledge if I would have I keep this or not. Greetings… Tim."

Very similar to the entertaining 1883 book "English as She is Spoke".

I think it will be great and useful.

It is Google translate which is, well.. just as good ( or bad) as Google translate. Does literal translations that is all. Often disregarding phrase construction rules and missing idioms and nuances. Blowing it big ways other times. But it does a great job for a first pass at translating, and given our international membership, I would say it is a great addition for those who speak little English. It also is sometimes very funny, and occasionally just gibberish, but so what?
Nice idea and very nicely integrated! Tim, I love the spellcheck!

I have just tested it and it is pretty good although it is still a machine translation: some sentences sound like they were made by someone who learned Dutch as a second language.
But the funny thing was that when I wanted to add my comments I found that you were all fluent in Dutch all of a sudden :-) Well done guys! Rolling On The Floor Laughing

I think this is a great idea. Funny in a way because I've been translating some things for future Gazette issues and the other day I decided to include both the French original as well as the English translation. I just finished a Gazette volume that was in German and included both the German and English.

Tim - do we share the same brain? Lol

I would probably add it to the line
"Contact Webmaster | Visitors Online | Unsubscribe Emails | Language"
and open up the list from a link rather than a drop-down. That would look a bit neater.

It is the sort of thing that you only need to setup once. But where it is is fine.

re: A Trial: Translating Stamporama into other languages

It seems to have good potential. We may need to watch out for some of the 'trade talk.' I tried Google Translate with a few things and didn't always get good results. I put in 'mint' and got a word that back-translated as 'mint,' but really was the word for an aromatic herb.

I put Philatelia's post into Latin, and got 'Valde frigus' for 'Very cool'- seems pretty good. I put that through another online translator (Latin to English) and got out 'heavy frost' - not quite the same.

As long as we remember to be careful with terms that mean something to us and something else to 99% of the world (mint, perforated, hinge, etc.)and to watch slang and idioms, this can be very helpful.
