I recently ran across this cover and was wondering if anyone here has an idea what the numbers stamped in purple on the reverse of the cover are for....route number, maybe???
I have no clue - just a guess!

re: STAMPED NUMBERS ON COVER

Well the "171" does match the Sears Department printed on the front side. So if I were to guess, it's an internal Sears hand-stamp -- but no idea what the "409" would be...

re: STAMPED NUMBERS ON COVER

Since the front is clearly marked "DEPT. 171", I'm guessing that 171-409 is a clerk (more likely) or a desk (work station), but cannot imagine why this would not be neatly stamped on the front.

Cheers,

Hadn't noticed that - thanks!

Stretching here, but;

could the "409" be the time it was prepared to be mailed? Since the postmarked timestamp reads "4:30PM"

....and I could very well be way off on that.....

I am guessing that:

- Sears could not care less what time they sealed the envelope, but

- Sears could care a lot about who filled & sealed the envelope.
