Interesting. Hadn't heard of moon cancels, but a quick search brought up some heavy fancy cancels in the shapes of a quarter moon. There are also standardized circular cancels in which a dividing line makes part of the cancel look like a moon. Do you have pictures or references to the ones you are looking at?

"MOON Cancels
Money order office number (MOON) cancels were issued in the mid-1920s to post
offices that could sell money orders. These cancels are generally rectangular and
include the town name, office number, and date. Less well studied and collected,
they offer a challenging yet inexpensive area."
It appears they were used until, at least, through the 90s.
Well, I learn something new every time I come here!
However, I'll stick with my definition of "moon cancels..."
Unfortunately, these are not mine--I just grabbed them from the web.

Thankyou Ted for your help ..I knew that the MOON cancels were somewhat different from the modern box (rectangular) shape cancels as there were more numbers on the cancels
POCON Post Office Computer Organization Number another term for me to ponder...and collect... Some have postal codes .. earlier ones do not...
Great discussion!
I'm in the process of sorting, clipping, and tossing a horde of envelopes from 1970's to present. I do recall seeing the MOON type cancel but I did not pay any attention to it, until now. Do any of you have an interest in receiving some of these or do I just toss them? Almost free!!!

..I updated with this.
I 'found' these ...do they count?
Moon cancels have only 4 numbers and maybe a letter..Were common in the earlier years before 1973
wigalso - did anyone take you up on the offer? If not I'd like them - and I'll cover shipping. shibumi.management@gmail.com
I always thought that MOON cancels were used only during the 1920`s to cancel money orders but I have just seen several ebay listings as Moon cancels and the dates are in the 1990`s and onward...I thought those were box cancels Can someone help ?
