Here is a description of an item available for Auction here next month. I have found DDR to have so many issues, and some hard to come by individually at reasonable prices, that I am tempted to just buy this "everything issued" lot and be done with it. Then sell off my existing accumulation to subsidize this purchase.

For argument's sake, what would be a reasonable price (or minimum/bargain to maximum/retail-sales-value) to pay?

Many thanks. Dave.

German Democratic Republic complete collection of regular and semi-postal issues from 1949 through 1990 housed in 6 Lindner hingeless albums with slip cases. In absolutely pristine condition. A few highlights are the 1950 Definitive set, the 1950 Stamp Day Semi-postal souvenir sheet, the 1951 Mao Tse-tung set (50pf is upper left corner margin with imprint), the 1953 Karl Marx souvenir sheets both perforate and imperforate, and on and on it goes. This collection was purchased intact in 1998 from Alfred Kneip "Briefmarkenversand" in Germany for 5,150 DM which was equivalent to $3726 CDN in those days. It is being offered exactly as it was purchased. A remarkable mint collection that is routinely very fine to superb throughout, never hinged.

re: Some guidance/feedback requested

There are so many variables and so little information it is difficult to even speculate what a specialized collection of DDR would bring.

Was there an estimated value assigned to the lot? Is a catalog value given for the material? Is this a mail order auction or a public auction ? How much advertising is being done on the auction sale itself?

Lastly this type of material would bring vastly different prices depending on which auction house was involved. if it's a public auction even the weather can play into the final hammer price, as can the presence or absence of regular key bidders.

One collector thought it was worth around $3700 Canadian 20 years ago, long after the collapse of the market. On the other hand the MNH premium on key issues has strengthened (unless I missed it's collapse).......

Any more info available ???

I would say the Lindner albums are the most valuable and the mentioned selling price of > 5000 DM which would be > 2500 euros seems high to me, especially given the fact DDR is, as far as I am aware at least, not really that popular.

re: Some guidance/feedback requested

I have a near complete DDR collection, lacking only 82-4 and a few of the nigher valued officials. If I had to sell it now, I'd expect a tiny fraction of what I paid for it. Perhaps $500 maximum. It is one of those areas that is fun to collect with attractive issues and a lot of topical/historic interest but just not really worth too much today, if indeed it ever was. A dealer at a show I attended last month related that he bought a collection complete for $400 or so and that included hingeless albums. It's your money but your lot seems overpriced.

The Lindners may be worthwhile at a bit under $1000. I personally would not go over $2000 US for this lot but if you love it, who am I to say?

There are certain collecting areas like this, hot property once, now with their best days behind them. Israel and Vatican come to mind. Certainly UN. What I find interesting is how dealers manage to inflate buy prices for key sets of these areas in some cases to an unrealistic level past their true scarcity. DDR 82-4 runs in the $75 area these days for a NH set. It is not a scarce set. It is however one that collectors seeking completion will need to buy. Thus the price. Israel 7-9 is another example. You cannot find this set at under $100 even for hinged. Try to sell a set with a Buy it Now and you'll wind up selling it for under $50. Probably its true value.

I'll reply from a different perspective. Wouldn't buying a complete collection kinda take the fun out of it. Especially where a specialized area is concerned. One of the things I love about the hobby is the hunt for that next space filler, whether it's a single, set or sheet. The thrill at the end of the chase makes it worth the wait. Maybe it's just me, but I'd feel like I was cheating.

re: Some guidance/feedback requested

Thanks all for the responses.

I deliberately omitted the auctioneer's "expected realization" as I feel that could influence the responses (it's a thing we refer to as "anchoring" in behavioural finance).

Other than that, there is no other information or scans available. It will simply be me walking into the Auction blind and bidding or not based on finding whether the collection is indeed as described: complete, MNH and pristine.

I like to set ranges when I buy anything (even clothes - which my wife hates!!!). So I'd be thinking if I can get this - albums and stamps - for $1,000 it's awesome, $2,000 ok , and $3,000 pass... Thoughts?

I also like WB's perspective. I'm not in this to buy/sell or create an investment portfolio. Collecting is the fun part, and indeed even when I've gotten minimum CV stamps, where they completed a page/set I've been like a kid in a candy store.

The other thing that strikes me is the possibility of an economy of scale where I could "buy a complete set in bulk" and consider offering certain items to fellow SoR members of harder to find material at reasonable prices to offset my overall purchase price (and of course, can also sell my existing issues).

Anyway, lots of thinking here, and appreciate the input.

Dave

re: Some guidance/feedback requested

I have a complete MNH DDR collection with the exception of the Officials.

My collection is based on Michel as Scott does not include all of the regular issues and s/s that are found in the complete DDR collection.

I bought mine through various sellers in the former DDR and by year sets. I bought first on eBay and found two sellers I really liked and continued with both of them privately to complete my collection.

I did the same with Berlin of which I am only missing four year sets that I'll pick up later.
