Good catch Ian. I just got home from some out of town business today and saw the Auction cock-up. Sent a PM and was told this is already being investigated. Then I saw your post afterwards!

A weird head-scratcher to be sure!

I'm blaming the Russians until told otherwise...

Dave.

re: Severe Problem with an Auction Lot URGENT Attention Needed

I tried to check to see if other items had the same problem but there were none that had that many multiple bids with proxie bids.

The automated system has declared me the winner, the winning amount being $1.00!!!
I am willing to ignore this result.

Here is a part copy of a message I have sent to David:-

"May I suggest that once Tim has sorted the problem that the item be put up for auction again, and those that bid on the item be notified. I think that would be the fairest way for the bidders AND especially for the seller.
Kindest regards,
Ian"

Please don't blame the Russkies. I have it on good authority that the mice in the treadmill went on a go slow for shorter hours, longer meal breaks and better quality cheese!!!

re: Severe Problem with an Auction Lot URGENT Attention Needed

May I Quote from the Auction Rules:-

B1. Placing a bid or using the Buy It Now feature creates a legal contract between a buyer and seller. Through submittal of a bid or use of the Buy It Now feature, buyers acknowledge that they have read and understand the auction rules and the seller's terms and conditions, and that they will pay for the lot if they are the highest bidder at the time the auction closes, or the Buy It Now feature is used.

B2. Bids may not be retracted.

Of course there may be situations that would allow retraction, like Fire, Flood, Earthquake, Plague of Locusts etc etc etc.
We are not totally inhumane!

This is a weird one. Something went wacky when PastorStamper made his $1.60 bid and it looks like the high bid on the lot was recorded as 60c rather than $1.60. I don't know what has caused this. I've never seen something like this before in this system. I checked out the other multi-bid lots that are currently in the Auction and they seem to be working normally.

Please keep an eye open for this and let me know as soon as you see something that looks to be the same problem.

Regards ... Tim.

Just an off-the-wall guess, but my first thought would be to investigate/test for the presence of a non-standard character. If you are testing the inputs prior to inserting the info into the database, a character may be passing the test, but being rejected by the database.

re: Severe Problem with an Auction Lot URGENT Attention Needed

As the seller, I think I have to make the final ruling as objectively as possible.

The high bid ON RECORD was $1.60 from PastorStamper.

He told me he entered a bid for $1.75 and Ian told David he wanted to enter a bid of $2.88 - but neither can be confirmed (and others may have entered or could claim they also wanted to or attempted a higher bid).

I realize I could probably maximize my own wealth (I use this in the economics sense - not as actually "wealth") by doing otherwise. But, in my mind, PastorStamper has the high recorded bid and I am deeming him to be the ultimate winner; and have contacted him with payment terms as such (to which he has agreed).

We are dealing with gremlins, nobody is at fault (not even Russia!), and this is Twilight Zone level weirdness.

I ask that we please close this particular thread and move on, having learned life (and the SOR system) may be imperfect. I anticipate some uninvolved parties will want to add their critical 2 centavos to this decision. If so, please send me a PM.

Thanks, Dave.

Dialysis, damned if you do...dead if you don't

re: Severe Problem with an Auction Lot URGENT Attention Needed

With all due respect to Dave, software code runs the same way every time. There is no such thing as a software gremlin, the code does not magically change on its own.

As Roy mentioned, this was a data entry issue. Something that rarely occurs happened with the data entry. This means there is a shortcoming with the data entry validation code, users should not be able to enter anything which causes errors. (This is called ‘error trapping’ by software coders. In most cases, you can write the basic function for a process in a line or two of code. But your then add hundreds of additional lines of code for error trapping, dealing with the unexpected.)

It is important to figure out what happened if the desire is to make the code more bullet proof and improve the code. But if no one cares that it is possible to have issues with bidding; then just move on without dealing with it.

Thanks Don, but my two daughter's and my best friend (a recently-retired computer science prof) could tell you that it is a well-known fact that I am a total dunce when it comes to computers.

So no respect whatsoever (on that front at least) is required.

Thanks for the kind words though! Dave.

Per Don's post, it may be advisable to create a test auction and have multiple people bid on it. Attempt to input different characters.. $, space, any control characters, etc and see what happens. The error is probably at the bidder input level. I don't know this software, but back when I created Fortran queries there was a command called INFMT (or something like that) that would control what type of character would be accepted as user input.

As odd a character as Dave may be, I don't think he caused the error! And Dave, somehow my million dollar bid didn't go through! Oh well.
