I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

For those who have access to Scott catalogues and maybe others that I do not have. Does the illustration of the British Colonial WM 314 in the catalogue show sideways or upright? If it is sideways, can I assume (hate that word), that if I turn the watermark up and down then it is upright?

Also, is there any information that illustrates side by side comparisons of upright, sideways, inverted, etc of watermarks?

Thanks for any help,

Mel

Don,

I read that, but if the illustration shows sideways, how do I tell a 1960 stamp from a 1966 stamp? Will the 1960 stamp run from top to bottom?

Position the stamp so that it is correctly oriented with the design upright. Look at the watermark. If the watermark is aligned with the stamp design, then it is upright. If the watermark at a 90 degree angle from the stamp design, then it is sideways.

re: Sideways or Upright WM

That is what I am thinking. Looking at Falkland Islands Scott #128. If the WM is upright the the cat value for mnh is $3.75. Scott #128a wmk sideways has a cat value of 45 cents.

Not concerned with value as much as correct ID. The WM on my stamps is aligned with the design and is very visible.

Thank all very much for the help.

re: Sideways or Upright WM

Regarding Falkland Islands Scott 128, the watermark should be upright in relation to the bottom of the stamp. So if you turn the stamp over with the wide side at the bottom, the crowns and CA should be upright.

Looking at the back of Scott 128a with the wide side at the bottom, you will see the crowns and CA displayed sideways. It was a later printing from Scott 128.

re: Sideways or Upright WM

Tom,

Thank you for the additional confirmation. My WM looks just like the WM 314 picture that Don posted and the additional information from Michael. So, it looks like I have a MNH Scott #128 from the Falkland Islands.

Again, thanks for the help.
