This is Malaysia-Selangor #138. The stamp on the right has the same colouring as all of the same version for each of the states.

The one on the left seems to be missing a colour - It appears to me to be a "yellowish-pink" which is clearly noticeable in the orchid's leaves and petals. But may also account for the other features being darker than the normal stamp (leading me to believe it would have been the last colour added if they were done in stages).

No mention in Scott's about this variation, and not sure if there is a specialty source that would address this.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Dave.

re: Any Malaysia Experts?

My thoughts are that the stamp on the left is probably the watermarked printing (1979), Scott #138, and the one on the right is probably the later, unwatermarked printing (1984-1985), Scott #138a. You'll have to check for that, but the watermark may be difficult to see.

You're correct that Scott does a lousy job (again) of describing the later printings (1984-1985). However, you can see the different descriptions that they have for the four stamps from that group and it'll give you an idea of what to find.

re: Any Malaysia Experts?

Thanks Michael. I did some more checking on Stamp World (they have decent pictures of each) and elsewhere on line.

I am now convinced you were on the right track, but it is the one on the left that is the unwatermarked version and the one on the right that is watermarked.

Thanks for the point in the right direction, Dave.

Hi Dave,
I checked my Standard Catalogue of Malaysia-Singapore-Brunei. It does not list a missing flower color var. for this stamp. It does state for the 10 cent stamp that the background for the No Watermark printing is purple-brown instead of sepia whereas for the watermarked version the color shade is brighter and sharper design. Some of these issues are very difficult to see the watermark. The 20 cent issue is known to have a missing watermark on the first watermarked issue(1979). I have only come across one. Paul.

From the pictures, there looks to be a difference in the position of the scientific name text in relation to the flowers between the two stamps, too.

As these stamps were issued by all the states, in Gibbons all the detail is shown under Johore. There are differences in shade/detail between the watermark/non-watermark printings of all the stamps in this issue ( up to 2001 edition of catalogue - there may be further differences subsequently ).

I am not convinced of the quality control of these stamps as they were printed by a name which is somewhat unfamiliar to me ( Asher of Australia ), so it is quite likely that there are further differences not generally known. Often close study of modern issues is not deemed worthy by many collectors - other than the well known ones such as GB Machins. However there are a number of serious philatelists in Malaysia who may have local knowledge.

My advice ( as with all stamps ) is to closely examine each one against the one in your collection, and if one sees a difference try to contact a specialist. Contrary to the beliefs of many not ALL colour differences are changelings - and if you get several copies of an identically different appearance to the original it is likely to be a genuine ( if often unintentional ) variation.

Malcolm
