Does stamp recognition software really work for rare stamps and rare colors?

re: STAMP RECOGNITION SOFTWARE

Stamp recognition software has significant challenges that have yet to be resolved. Software can typically recognize the basic stamp designs. The only challenge with basic stamp design recognition are heavy cancels or black and white stamp designs with cancels; but generally it works fairly well. And of course determining the perforation gauge is fairly straight forward for software.

The real challenges are dealing with watermarks, paper types, and colors. I know of no way for software to over-come these critical variables.

In theory yes. In real world ... light-years away from becoming reliable (especially if you are dealing with used stamps or stamps with 'imperfections' or 'irregularity'. The algo's used by existing software solutions are just too 'simple' to deal with 'real world'.

Here's a small study (comparing various tools and their results, as well as explaining the technical side of the difficulties) I wrote about it year back: https://www.stampcollectingblog.com/the-difficulty-of-automated-stamp-perforation-measurements-and-why-gauging-manually-is-still-leading-the-pack.php (note: article is for subscribers only, free access through trial subscription is available).
