I have been a collector of Polish stamps since 1972 and have a fairly complete collection with a 1985 cutoff. A lot of the early stamps, especially overprints and much of the early BOB have the following comment in Scott's - reproductions are common. I have tried to find information that would allow me to spot these fakes, but have had very little success. My stamp dealer realizes there is a problem and deals with it by grossly reducing the price. Is there a document out there somewhere that will help me or do I just look at these stamps as "album fillers"? I also collect Russia and I believe the same problem occurs. I know repros are everywhere with most countries but with Poland especially no one seems to be able to tell me how to spot fakes! Can anyone out there recommend a solution except for saying "don't collect early Poland and Russia"? For me that's not an option since I find the early stamps the most interesting.

re: Poland reproductions or fakes of early stamps

If you have access to "The Serrane Guide", there is a reference bibliography of a large number of resources for detecting forged, altered, reprinted, etc. stamps from most countries. The Poland list is quite long (25 references). If there are only a few issues you are concerned with, I can add a short list here. I will need the year of issue, and the name of the issue or type, such as "1919 Cracow Overprints". Catalog numbers won't work as the reference list doesn't provide them.

Also, a few Polish stamps are described in Tyler's book, "Focus on Forgeries".

re: Poland reproductions or fakes of early stamps

I appreciate the information about the Serrane book - I wasn't familiar with it. I checked out my favorite book buying site, Abe Books, and their lowest price was $400! It seems to be a very rare book. I would like to have a copy so if any one out there has a copy for sale at a more affordable price could you please let me know? There are many early Polish fakes and I would love to have the book to see if it would help. I have been collecting Poland for a very long time and just lately noticed how many early fakes were out there. I also collect Russia and the same problem exists! Thanks for your help!

Try the APS. The American Philatelist reprinted The Serene guide back in the 1980's or 1990's. They might photocopy the appropriate sections at a nominal cost.

re: Poland reproductions or fakes of early stamps

Thanks VINLAND for the information. I'll check out the links and go through your list and see if I can find the information I want. I would still really like to buy a copy of the Serrane book if anyone has a copy for a price of, say around $100 to $200. I just joined Stamporama today and am very impressed with the helpfulness of the members and will try to do my bit as well!

re: Poland reproductions or fakes of early stamps

Just so you know, The Serrane Guide itself has very little information on Polish forgeries. The coverage varies by country, and only goes up to 1926. The original book was printed in French. The APS had it translated into English, often not very well, but it is still indispensable. The reference bibliography at the end would be your biggest help, if you are only interested in Polish stamps.

Another good work is called "Album Weeds" by R. B. Earee. It also is an older work done around the same time as The Serrane Guide, but it was published in English. It's in two volumes and appears often on Ebay. A CD ROM version can sometimes be found as well.

If you are a member of the APS, you can probably borrow the reference books mentioned here and in the previous response for a small fee from the American Philatelic Research Library.

re: Poland reproductions or fakes of early stamps
