Can someone identify the cancellation mark on the stamps in the picture (US 1931 2 cent Yorktown. It seems there are no specific details in the cancellation mark itself.

Possibly these stamps and some others were on a cover that utilized registered mail service. One sees these cancels on that type of mail. The cds cancels would also appear on the back in a normalized format of city date stamp.

These are mute cancels on stamps used to pay postage for a large envelope or smaller parcel. As there was no guaranteed delivery time, mute cancels were used as there was no need to indicate the date the item entered the mail.

For indexing my Cancels on Stamps collection I call them "racetracks," although mute oval would be more correct.

Yes. Parcel post did not have a guaranteed delivery time, so stamps used to pay for parcel post were cancelled with mute cancels.

they can also be used to cancel Registered mail, where dates are typically shown on reverse, not cancelled stamps
