The stamps are fantastic and colorful
Many of the French Polynesian stamps are related to Art. French Polynesia is strongly influenced by French art. France is #1 in the world when comes art. Some of the best Artist lives in French Polynesia.
(Below) Paul Gauguin is the most famous Artist in French Polynesia's history. He was born in France, but moved to French Polynesia after falling in love with the islands.
(Below) Here are some stamps in art (1970's). These set of stamps are very beautiful & expensive, but a must have for all French Polynesian stamp collectors.
Beautiful stamps.

I think the aircraft shown on the stamp about 3 comments above is a Douglas DC-6B for anyone interested. I like these older piston aircraft. I guess it's similar to liking the style of the earlier transatlantic liners compared to the modern cruise ships which look like floating hotels.
Now I have to correct myself. It is a DC-7C which Transports Aériens Intercontinentaux used for Bora Bora to Honolulu and then onto LA. Aircraft F-BIAQ was bought in January 1958 if I'm reading the list correctly. This makes sense as the 2010 stamp is celebrating 50 years of Fa'a'a international airport in Tahiti which opened in 1960. (Thanks to Wikipedia for the information.)
Fa'a'a international airport is the busiest airport in French Polynesia. It's located in the capital city of Papeete. In 2010, Fa'a'a international airport celebrated 50th anniversary. Most of the travelers landed at this beautiful airport when visiting French Polynesia.
Both Air Tahiti & Air Tahiti Nui operated at this airport. In 2008, the Philatelic Center of French Polynesia released issues honoring Air Tahiti Nui. This airline is very young with only 10 years old.
A nice tradition for departing visitors is the necklace of small shells. (and flowers when you arrive). If you are well known and have many family members wishing you off, you may need an extra suitcase to put all the necklaces (one per person) you will receive. On the other hand, when you arrive at your destination, you will have plenty of "presents" to offer those you meet.
Not sure how they handle it today with the extra layers of airport security!
rrr...
Incidentally, all the Gauguin paintings are in France's museums or privately owned. The Gauguin museum in Tahiti had copies, last time I looked.
A joint issue with French Polynesia and Brasil.
Thank you Mr. Pierri Loti.
Here's a Pierre Loti stamp issued in 2017. His painting is amazing
This is a wonderful thread. Thanks for sharing and educating us on the islands.
Almost every Miss French Polynesia has contributed to stamp collecting. They have a very close relationship with the Philatelic Center of French Polynesia. It's a tradition that lasted for over 50 years.
Timia Teriiero (1977 Miss French Polynesia) entered Miss Universe Pageant. There, she met Pascale Taurau (1977 Miss Caledonia). Both were art students & they became good friends. Years later, Pascale became an accomplished Painter while Tamia got married & started a family. Both kept in touch throughout decades. (Below) Timia Teriiero, 1977 Miss French Polynesia on the stamp.
Timia's friend Pascale became a famous Painter in Paris. In 2018, one of Pascale's painting was featured on the stamp. The Philatelic Center of French Polynesia officially issued this & 100,000 stamps were printed!........(Below) Pascale Taurau's stamp. Thank you Timia & Pascale.
Last night, our French Polynesia Stamp Club had a meeting at my home. Just a small group of us get together on weekend. We discussed 3 stamps that were issued during the economic recession in French Polynesia (1999 & 2012). Les trois beaux timbres ravivent des souvenirs. Nous avons longuement discuté de ces timbres.
(Below) Here is a beautiful stamp released in 1999. It was issued on St. Valentines Day. May love spreads around the world.
(Below) Here is a set of stamps promoting Women's Day. It highlights women's contributions to the society.

(Below) This is Frida, one of the staff at Philatelic Center of French Polynesia. She set up a stand at a local shop in Tahiti and promoting stamp collecting. She's one of our hero as she often shared her photos & stories through Facebook & Skype. Thank you Frida.
Artist Julien Malland paint the entire side of a building in Tahiti.
Here's a cute French Polynesian stamp celebrating 50th year of UN.
This was issued for World Tourism Day. This set of stamps are the best representation of French Polynesian culture & it's beauty.
I wonder if Tahiti issued any stamps in 1840 ?
Tahiti's first stamp was issued in 1882.
It was a French Colonies stamp surcharged with a black overprint.
Thanks.

Here's a set of beautiful French Polynesian art stamps
Yesterday, our French Polynesian stamp club had a meeting about a set of stamps.
In 1974, a pair of French Polynesian stamps were issued. During that year, the popularity of golf was at an all time high on this beautiful island. Il a ramené de merveilleux souvenirs. You will remember 1974 if you are a golf player. What a great year for all golf fans.
This is one of my favorite items...
Thanks so much for posting this item. This is a Souvenir Sheet that celebrated the 200th anniversary of Tahiti discovery. This Souvenir Sheet is expensive ($200), but I got it for $60. There is also 3 individual stamps, but expensive too ($40). However, I got it for $18.
.
Many of us French Polynesian Specialist considered this item as "rare" due to low mintage & few survived in proof condition today. To me, this item should belongs to museum.
.
I always get emotional when I see this item because it was issued on my late sister's birth year (1968). A special year in my heart. (Far left) My sister performing at a Polynesian festival in Taiwan
David67, our Nephew Mark has been living in Taiwan for at least 20 years..we have no idea what he does...but he has not asked us for money. Cheers, phil

I would suggest starting a new thread called French Polynesia Stamps Part 2 since it is very image heavy and not loading well.
French Polynesia (Tahiti)
Population: 280,000
Location: Pacific Ocean
While most stamp collectors focus on Europe, North America & Asia, there's a tiny number of collectors (under 3000) that collect French Polynesian stamps only. Most of us are bi-lingual (French & English) due to communication.
Most of us lived in Oceania (Pacific Ocean). However, I lived in USA. I was born in Taiwan & our culture is similar to French Polynesia(Dance, Stone carving & Art). Stamp is the best representation of my culture.
Most of French Polynesian stamp collectors don't attend auction or expo. We don't even networking with others. However, we have a very close relationship with Philatelic Center of French Polynesia. There are only 4 staff & we know the staff well because we purchased stamps from them often.
(Below) Frida (far left) is one of the 4 staff that handles all of our orders. Thank you very much
The Philatelic Center of French Polynesia released about 15 issues & print only 400,000 stamps per year. They're printed on high quality sheet. Almost all of the issues are in high denomination (100F). Due to the beauty of the stamp, high denomination, quality & limited quantity - the stamps are very desirable.
Miss French Polynesian Beauty Pageant is very active of promoting stamp collecting. Every year, the winner of Miss French Polynesian pageant volunteered to work with Philatelic Center of French Polynesia. Together, they setup booth promoting stamps at shopping malls, not at big convention or five star hotel
The Philatelic Center of French Polynesia produced stamp calendar of Miss French Polynesia (Tahiti) every year honoring their friendship. Many of us purchased the calendar which is in limited edition.
(Below) The Philatelic Center of French Polynesia released Miss French Polynesia stamps. 1988 Miss French Polynesia was a member of Philatelic Center of French Polynesia and she played a major role of promoting stamp collecting. Sadly, Teumere Pater was killed in accident (1993), she was only 26. 2018 Miss French Polynesia is also very active promoting stamp collecting. Vaimalama Chaves' father works full time at the Philatelic Center of French Polynesia. We are forever grateful to Teumere Pater & Vaimalama Chaves. Our beloved daughters of French Polynesia.
(Below) Here's a booth of the Philatelic Center of French Polynesia at International Stamp Expo. The staff travels to Oceania, Asia & Europe mostly. A tremendous effort by the staff.
(Below) Tourism is one of main attractions in French Polynesia.
(Below) French Polynesian culture is dominated by the outdoor activities.
(Below) The people are known for their hospitality with conviction "Love & Peace".
(Below) The culture is preserved regardless of the technology or evolution.
(Below) Life is slow paced on the island. These are one of my favorite stamp because it emphasized the importance of environment. l’environnement est un enjeu majeur en Polynésie française. C'est la clé de l'avenir.
