Cover was mailed from Hartford CT to Stockbridge NY in 1853, Does anyone know why the Stockbridge cancel was applied (it does not appear to have been forwarded) ???

My understanding is that receivers — postmarks applied by the receiving post office — were used to track transit times in order to monitor the system’s efficiency. The practice was common into the 1950s.
