When you say "we" do you mean the club is considering purchasing the sheet? If so why is a club purchasing? Does the club have a "museum"?
i think it astounding that a club has $6,000 available to it for a single purchase
1112 mentioned the other day about the generous amount of money their club has available to spend on their stamp museum collection. I was only able to find this stamp listed in the StampWorld catalog, however it was only listed as a single stamp, with a issue of only 40K singles, no mention of a $6K sheet at all. A great instance to remember the old saying, "caveat emptor" would be appropriate here, no matter the cost of the offering.

I would not recommend spending a lot on a single item. It is better to get more different less expensive items.
"I would not recommend spending a lot on a single item."
That's sometimes the only way to get an item if you want it for your collection. Just make sure the price is fair and the item is genuine - if possible.
Thanks for the comments. I will go along with your recommendation and vote "No" on purchasing. I think our stamp club can purchase more items for less $. The reason to purchase the stamp sheet imperf is due to it's rarity and to enhance our museum. The purchase will be make on behalf of our stamp club & that's why every member must vote. Whether we vote "Yes" or "No", it is strictly a business decision that will signify the direction of our future.
Below is a stamp which was produced during the space race between USA & USSR. We are familiar with this stamp and have researched this stamp. We already have this stamp, stamp sheet & Deluxe card in our inventory.
Quantity issued
40,024 stamps.
00,106 stamp sheets.
00,023 stamp sheet imperf.
00,091 Deluxe card.
The election is over. "Buy" outnumbered "Not Buy" vote. The election result was very close. Our stamp club will purchase this $6000 stamp sheet imperf. I was told this isn't a major purchase because it's under $100,000. I wonder what constitute major/minor purchase? Is there $ index somewhere out there?
The existence of this stamp sheet imperf is a mystery. We don't know how many of these sheet imperfs survived today, but we do know only 23 were produced & were later sold to private collectors. We also know these collectors are from Switzerland & New Zealand.
According to our data, it was been over 4 decades since this sheet imperf is on the market.
Given the availability of funds, quality of existing collection, the advancement that the item represents in securing a truly rare offering for the museum, and the goals of the club in promoting a best in class collection for the museum the purchase seems like a good choice for the club. Congratulations to the club on the acquisition!
Our French Polynesia stamp club recently had a long debate if we should buy this or not.
Year: 1965.
Item: Imperf sheet - French Polynesia
Catalog: $6000
There are 2 groups in this debate. One group support buying while other group opposed. I observed the debate & try to understand their point of view. There are certain technical detains that I don't understand. Anyway, both groups stated their argument:
The group believed we should buy because:
1) Rare with low mintage.
2) Print & date clearly shows.
3) MNH condition.
4) Doesn't have Imperf sheet for this issue.
5) Will enhance our stamp museum.
6) Bargain price at -4X, not using Yvert.
7) Familiar with Seller with long history of past purchases.
8) 30 days money back guaranteed with free delivery.
The group believed we shouldn't buy because:
1) Not in VF condition, some wrinkles.
2) Already have deluxe & proof card for this issue.
3) Serial Number is too high.
4) No certification.
5) Unfamiliar with Seller's background & rating.
6) Disagreed with price. No price negotiation.
7) Unevenly cut on sheet's upper corner.
We will vote next week to determine if we will buy or not. Thurs far, the opinion is evenly divided. I don't know which way I should vote. Do you folks ever have a debate like this?
