I have a 2007 English Michel, page 160 references gum differences with some premiums.
Michel # 785-796
Michel states; The gum differences with these issues are presently being investigated. The results will appear in a future listing.
Thank you. I just ordered a new Michel English.
In the Michel 2019 catalogue the 40 pfenig stamp (Mi#795) is mentioned with the numbers 795vy and 795wy with the mention:“waagerechter riffelungsahnliche Gummi-brechung,sehr helle(dunkle) Gummierung“
The quotation for MH/MNH is 10/25 Euro
The new English Michel for the German Reich doesn't say anything about printings or gum. They just list a few with shade and perf varieties. This is for 781-802B. Not sure if this is what you are talking about...
Peter
This is what the 2011 Michel edition looks like.
In 2019 it is the same.
The English edition may not contain all the information
This is what my 2016 English version of Michael says.
I am using the new English version of the German Reich book, which is quite basic...
I didn't even know that catalog existed - guess I'll have to find one!
Thanks for showing the cover!
Randall,

Hi musicman
Michel in English edition might not be a successful investment.
I compared the catalog page posted by BrightonPete with the my Michel specialized 2019 edition
The color of the 783 stamp (4 pf.) is translated wrong.(prussianblue=??? blue)
One good thing is the color code listed in brackets
In this case it is useful to buy the Michel colour guide (90Euro).
I think Michel basic in English does not help you more in identifying German stamps (especially for the colour varieties) than Scott.
Not sure what year or version BrightonPete is using, but my 2016 version, 2nd edition shows the following for #783 witch is a direct translation from the Michel. Shows the same color.
Also note at the bottom of the page the information regarding color research.
I also believe the Michel color guide is an excellent investment. Wish I had one.
Sorry about the poor image, but trying to scan/copy from a bound book is difficult for me.

Germany Specialized Vol. 1
ISBN 978-3-95402-120-8
German Reich
ISBN 978-3-95402-316-5
The "German Reich" is a new 108 page thick book that came out in March of this year. It appears to be taken from the basic Germany catalogue. The specialized is due for renewal I suppose, latest edition is the 2016 version. On the other hand, right now it is just € 19.80 for a 500+ pages catalogue compared to € 29,80 for the new one that has less information.
As I mentioned before :
The Michel Catalog does not catalog gum- and paper differences anymore of most of the stamps of the Third reich period.
Also colors that are slightly different are not mentioned anymore.
So DARK TO BLACKISH PRUSSIAN BLUE is the description now-a-days
In the early days there would be, maybe, 3 different colors with different prices.
Just as Gerom Showed us in a earlier post :
LEBHAFT PREUSSISCH BLAU
PREUSSISCH BLAU
DUNKEL PREUSSISCH BLAU
SCHWARTZLICH PREUSSISCH BLAU
I am at work now, but if do not forget it I will scan the page of my old Catalog of all the gum and paper differences of those Hitler stamps.
As promised :
German :
v = Weisser Gummi
w = Gelber Gummi
x = senkrecht geriffelter Gummi
y = waagerecht geriffelter Gummi
z = glatter Gummi
English :
v = white gum
w = yellow gum
x = vertically corrugated gum
y = horizontally corrugated gum
z = smooth gum
BE AWARE THAT THE PRICES ARE IN DEUTSCH MARKS AND ARE FROM 1992
Nr 781, 784 and 785 have all an a and b variant in color.
Color variations :
I tried to scan the gum-side of those stamps but you can not see the x, y and z variations
after I scanned them.
Thanks HockeyNut for this information.
I don't collect this series but in the lots I bought I have some "Hitler's head" stamps.
The stamp on the left has some vertical lines (I couldn't get a clearer picture)
I'm curious why this information has been removed from the new catalogue editions.
Comparing the stamp with one of the Berlin Brandenburg series (which has horizontal lines) I notice that there is a big difference although in the catalogue they have the same denomination: "senkrecht/waagerecht geriffelte Gummierung".
Is it possible that the vertical lines on stamp 3 pf are caused mechanically and not by the way the gum is applied?
Could this be the reason why the information was removed from later editions of the catalogue?
I would like to thank everyone who has responded. I had already ordered the Michel English version. I guess I will have another nice edition to my small library.
I have a collection which has several gum variations of the First, Second and Third Printings of the Hitler Head stamps. I do not have a Michel German Catalogue. Is there much of a valuation in these different gum varieties?
