I dimly remember someone writing that on occasion several items for which postage was due were bundled, and the total amount was indicated on the top one. The pictures that were shown, however, dated from the 1970s to 1990s, but maybe the practice is older?
An oversized first class local letter (presumably) dropped at a carrier PO, rated at 2c (local rate from 7.1.33 - 3.26.44).
Sent to Omaha Hat corp, which was in neither Omaha nor on 51st in NYC, it was forwarded to Garwood NJ with a 1c Postage Due hand stamp in purple to cover the difference between local and regular first class rates.
This matches what Tony W says should happen.
So, how did we get the 5c postage due stamp and what rates might it represent?
There are no markings on the reverse.
