Any one of the Canon LiDe units.
Well under US$100
Most important, a user friendly TWAIN interface. I have used Canon's for 15 years, and generate about 100,000 scans a year. They last forever.
I have tried others, like HP, but hated the interface.
Roy
thanks, Roy
Do I download the Twain interface? is it part of the scanner? you can tell I don't know what I'm doing, but am planning to follow your recommendation the minute I understand it
David
Amsd, if you use Irfanview then you already have a twain interface. Scan gear is bundled within the program.
If you go to "file" "select twain source" it should show the scan gear screen even if you do not have a scanner.
Edit possibly not although it will probably find your printer.

The 700F is my favourite, because of the orientation of the lid and also a minor, but important detail in handling covers, the glass comes right to the edge of the platten. There is no lip and covers can be slid right off after scanning. I have 4 of them in service right now and I keep my eye open for cheap ones on Kijiji (Canada's Craig's List) and ebay.
Here's one on ebay in the US:

Just do a search for "Canon 700F scanner". I don't see all the ones listed that that won't ship internationally, so you should get a whole lot more choice.
Another benefit of these is that there is no power cord. Gets its power from the USB port along with data transfer. Only one cord.

I also have a Canon printer / scanner and am very pleased. I scan 4 postcards or 3 covers at a time. Perfect images every time. I find it best to have it produce one image of the entire bed, because the option that is supposed to detect and save each item as a separate jpg falls short, causing a lot of redos. For instance it will cut off perforations, or the white space around a postcard image.
I use Irfanview and it has the exact options I need to manipulate images. Best yet it’s free!
thanks so much
you guys are the best
Looking for scanner only?
Not a scanner/printer/etc??
I use a Brother Work Smart Series all-in-one and it was only 50 bucks.
It also works as a stand-alone printer.
Recall that I said I go looking for cheap Canon 700F scanners on ebay? I just bought one a minute ago (Canadian listing).
C$30 + C$25 shipping.
List price was C$55. I made a $30 offer on the same listing a couple of weeks ago. It was declined at that time, but after this discussion, I checked my watch list and it was still there, so I repeated the $30 offer. This time accepted.
That gives me a nice backup for the other 4.
I also use Irfanview for scanning and image manipulation, to the tune of 100,000 images a year. Irfanview uses the Canoscan TWAIN interface ("Select TWAIN Source") and I scan in batch mode (automatic saving of the full platten image) and then go back through the images and crop individual items and save to another folder. Works flawlessly. I have an employee who can scan, crop, sleeve and number over 120 covers per hour. I'm not quite that fast, but I can do about 90.
Roy
just bought the 700F, new, from Canon, with free shipping.
i'll download infranview when it arrives
thank you all for your great help. it is really appreciated

I use a Canon Lide 210. Plug and play, cheap and reliable. And it scans rather well!
I'll vouch for Canon scanners too! I have a LIDE 400, and it works great. I love that it is powered via the USB cable, and not a separate wire/block to an outlet.

I also use a Canon scanner built in to my printer MP 640 I have been using it for years.I did have to go to the Canon web site and download the Scanner component after doing a reinstall of windows .
I find it very easy to use ,before I got the canon after the reinstall ,I tried another twain driver ,but it was not as good ,so I was very pleased to find it on the Canon web site.

Trying to follow Roy's advice I get this;
hank you for contacting Canon Sales Chat. My name is Terence and I would be more than happy to assist you with your product inquiry.

I have reviewed this model and see that this unit ended its service life in 2018. This is the reason it is no longer on the Canon USA page.
So what would be the best replacement, Roy ?
If folks only want a scanner, try the local thrift/charity shops, or even go to the local recycling centre and pick up a bargain. Usually it is the printer side that gives out, not the scanner.
As I said above, Irfanview has a built in twain interface, it can batch or individual scan.
Another vote for Canon! I have an MX452 that I use like Roy, full platen and I do my manipulation in Irfanview. I'm not as prolific as Roy and his team but I do put up some 500 or so eBay listings every month!
I have been using an HP printer/scanner for several years. In my MacBook Pro I can use the HP printer app to select image to scan and DPIs to 1,200 if I want a v. clear image. When the image is saved to a folder I then import it into Apple's Photo app where I can align the image, to straighten it up, and crop the image to my liking. I scan many of the stamps in my collection and add the images to a stamp catalogue program I use called StampCAT. I also add scanned stamps to a web program where I have built a blog. This all works seamlessly and is easy to run,
I'd like to add a scanner to my tools; likely it will only be used for stamps. It should have a bed about 10 X 12, and I'd default to JPGs.
I use a Lenovo lap top if that makes a difference
Appreciate any advice here or PM
David
