I'm pretty sure it's a revenue stamp from 1864. I don't think it is listed by Scott's. Probably is listed by somebody who is focused on South Africa or British colonies.
Definitely a revenue stamp. You will find it in a copy of Barefoot.

Stockflyer and Roy,
Thank you very much for the help. I thought I was going crazy not being able to identify that.

I ended up with a couple of these. They are attractive in their own way.
Tim,
Jan-Simon was looking for info on some of these a while back;
https://stamporama.com/discboard/disc_ma ...
Didn't seem to find much, though.
Wow. Interesting that a British revenue states "The Stamp Act". That's what got them in trouble with the colonies across the pond in the 18th century!
Either Barefoot 83(South Africa - Cape of good Hope) 1876 if watermark Crown CC, perf 14 (value 10p) or 15 1/2 x 15 (value £1),
or
Barefoot 111 (South Africa - Cape of good Hope) 1885 if watermark Anchor, perf 14 (value 10p).
Catalogue numbers may be different now as this is a fairly old catalogue
Wow. It looks like the book was printed on a dot matrix printer before lasers and inkjets become the norm.
The Victorian revenue stamps of Cape of Good Hope are very attractive with their classical appearance. I was lucky enough to buy a small stockbook of them years back when there were still small stamp dealers around the Leicester Square area in London. They are not worth much, but I do enjoy them.
Forbin #87 which looks to be the same as Barefoot 85.
Greg
Thanks guys. Much appreciated.
Tim.
Can anyone help me with a Scott number for this stamp? It was issued in 1864, but I can't find it in Cape of Good Hope and South Africa doesn't start until 1910. I'm out of ideas.
