Japanese markings on such stamps are usually from the days when the "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" ruled the former British and Dutch colonies. Japanese Occupation Stamps of WWII.. ... Whther postal, revenue or parcel postage depends on a specialized catalog .

Thanks Charlie,
I knew that there were Japanese overprints during the WWII period occupation for many of the Malay States. These stamps were issued in 1949, so maybe ship markings? Still a mystery. Paul.
