Also, in general, how common are forgeries? Some overprints look to be very amateurish and probably easy to replicate.

I would say, get yourself a copy of the Michel Specialized Germany (pt. 2). I think that has more information and more detail than you will ever find online.

And yes, many of these "Schwarzungen" / obliterations are crude and probably easy to forge. With the base material abundant and virtually valueless, the temptation will be very big to create some of these specialties. So yes, lots of forgeries around.

I was going through my literature on stamps and came across a lot of pictures of Hitler stamps with all kinds of overprints.
It might be nice to provide some more information in this thread.
I should mention that those stamps are not in my possession but pictures say more than a 1000 words.
And keep in mind, most of them are BOGUS.
Are there SOR members interested in this?
Maybe we can make a listing for ourselves!

All the above series have nothing to do with the "saxon blacks" issues.
The series above are local issues from different cities or districts.
Some are fake, others not.
Austria has some series in there catalog as you can see in the different posts above.
The Michel-catalog of germany only mentioning the "saxon blacks" issues and some other in the "lokal ausgaben" (different areas)

Use-up provisionals, so-called "Saxon blackening"
After the surrender, postal traffic was temporarily suspended. The relevant rulings indicated that until new stamps were issued the postage stamps still valid on 8. 5.1945 of the German Empire could still be used, but head images or other National Socialist features were made unrecognizable

I also read in my literature that there is a company in San Jose that reproduces not only stamps of the 3. reich era but also other paperwork like postcards, passes, autographed photos.
