Those French stamps look like a beautiful series! Somewhat similar to Germany's series of over-sized art stamps. Canada also did a relatively short series of famous paintings also. But it looks like France won out with their design of these stamps!
Maybe that will be a new topical collection!
Beginning in 1961, France began to issue a series of oversized Art Stamps of some of the most famous world artists.
Every year, The French "La Poste" (Post Office) issued a set of stamps, typically of 4 or 5 stamps, with these gorgeous reproductions, The very First set (Scott 1014-1017) (Y & T 1319-1322) is shown below, and started a trend for Post offices worldwide to start issuing larger and larger stamps.
First set had paintings by Braque, Matisse, Cezanne and R de la Fresnaye.
The French Stamps remained in a relatively standard size format of 53 mm by 41 mm, and the reproductions were superb, which made this a very attractive topical subject. Artists cover literally the whole spectrum, including my favorite (for very personal reasons, as it reminds me of my father) Scott 1204 ) (Y & T 1535) which is from a Lascaux Painting:
What is your favorite France Art Stamp? Is there a story behind your choice.
rrr...
The story behind my choice: A gorgeous Art Book on Lascaux was published in 1955 and was offered to my father in 1956 for is 12th birthday (Feb 29, once every 4 years), by fellow Cavers. It had a card/cartoon enclosed which translated said "I am no yet senile". and "Lucky he celebrates only once every 4 years".
Prized family memory!
