Is it possible to scan the reverse side?
Not sure if the overprint is genuine. This site does not include Australia as one of the countries that surcharged stamps.
Perhaps our Australia expert Rob can weigh in with advice from his knowledge.

Edit to add, welcome to the club, good to have you with us. Make use of the search tab, huge amount of knowledge residing in past posts. Much on Australia, including some fabulous scans.

From the above website.
"Great Britain and Australia imposed war taxes on mail, but did not issue war tax stamps; instead they used regular stamps to pay the fees."
It's 100% bogus I'm afraid. A similar 1½d green has been seen. Somebody with a typewriter and too much time on their hands........
I believe Dave is correct, after enlarging the image the word "WAR TAX" is typed over the cancellation mark instead of under it, which if the overprint was authentic would have been under the cancellation. Also Australia has never issued any stamp with the words "WAR TAX" overprinted on it. In 1941 Australia did issue a war tax on stamps, but this was in the form of surcharges.
Hello Stamporama,
I have just joined. I used to collect stamps as a kid. Now I'm getting older, I'm getting interested again, so my knowledge is basic.
I have had this stamp for a while and I wonder if anyone can shed any light on it. "WAR TAX" appears to have been typed on it, and upside down.
It is SG 21.
Thank you.
Jim
