Has anyone ever come across a censor’s label like this? The 1916 WWI cover was opened under the flap - not cut open and sealed at one end. Label was placed over flap on the back of the envelope. Überprüft Translates as “checked”. The design is quite a bit more elaborate than most of the censor seals that I’ve seen with a “opened” message, maybe the censor’s ID number and not much more.

Re the cover; A stampless Red Cross POW related WWI cover. Too bad the red Austrian military marking is very faint and mostly missing. The K.U.K. translates as “kaiserlich und königlich” or “Imperial and Royal” in English, similar to the British term “King and Country”.

I’ve seen several POW and Red Cross covers like this routed to Denmark (I collect both Denmark and Austria). After a bit of research, I learned that the reason for this is that the ICRC - International Committee of the Red Cross “at the start of the war (WWI) the Agency handled the correspondence, gifts and money orders sent to prisoners of war. These activities were subsequently taken over by the postal services of the neutral countries, i.e. Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden.” (“ICRC in WW1” quote from their website).

Link to that page here: https://www.icrc.org/en/doc/resources/documents/misc/57jqgr.htm (sorry Moderators - can’t activate link using iPad)

Would love to see other Austrian WWI censored covers if you have any.

re: Austria WWI Überprüft censor’s label

Interesting stuff my Grandfather was in Franz Josephs Jaeger regiment which makes sense being he was from the Dolomites. I am sure he would have been happier home making cheese but at least he was not one of the huge number of Austrians taken prisoner by the Russians. I loved my Grandfather, he passed away in 1965.
