Cheryl,
I haven't seen the Linn's article so do not know to what depth they go into the Spitzbergen issues.
There are a number of sources for info online but most are sketchy, much like the 'locals' themselves which, from most accounts, appear to be akin to the Scottish Island types. Given that the islands are uninhabited makes those accounts believable !!
Most issues were produced by or for Shipping companies which stopped at the islands. The first issue was for the Vesteraalens Steamship Company in 1896. Designed by Tromso resident Theodore Jebens. By all accounts the company built a wooden hut on one of the islands which was used as a 'Hotel' for adventurers who wished to stay awhile. I have just been looking at images of those islands and found a recent one with an old wooden hut !! Doubtless not the same as the one built in 1896 !!!!
I have a list of all the issues up until 1913 with specific info for each issue. I can send it to you if required.
For modern day issues (Svalbard-Spitsbergen) the link below might be useful. Bear in mind that most issues, old and modern, are speculative (dare I say bogus ??). But the designs on the older types are beautiful and capture the islands perfectly.
Hope all this helps. Let me know if you want more.

Ack: Spitzbergen Cinderellas by Harry S. Rooke (CP, January 1970)
UPDATE :
I just checked my copy of Fred Melville's 'Phantom Philately' and there is a nice short piece on the first issue of 'Spidsbergen'.
If it might be useful I can take a photo and send it to you.
Thankyou all your information Yes please send the scan and list or information on the early stamps Thankyou
I came across an article in Linns giving information on the Tourist Stamps of Norway . The Spitzbergen Stamps were local posts used for the islands of Spitzbergen andJjan Mayen for tourists visiting the island areas in 1896 and between 1910-11. However I see local stamps on ebay that were issued in 2020.
Any information on the history behind these stamps and their modern day usage would be appreciated.
Thanks Cheryl
