I always read the messages on old postcards. Remember, back in the day people used these penny conveyances to send messages to friends and family. This was before telephones for the masses, and certainly before emails and text messages!

And Tom, these cards worked very effectively as a means of quick communication between people. Much much better than the mails work today.
