Dave,
What a great cover. And from ARARAT, Vic, which is quite an interesting place in it self on the the road from Sydney to Melbourne. I've been through there several times many years ago.
Do you think it was a philatelic cover or was it just the stamps that the Post Master could find at the time. Back in 1931 things were not easy.
Regards ... Tim
Tim, I'd definitely say philatelic because there's more than one of the covers. I'm happy that the sender took up so much of the postmasters time though.
When did you visit our shores?
Dave, I spent my first 35 years there. I'm an Aussie who grew up on the north side of Sydney. We had family who lived in Melbourne so we did the Sydney - Melbourne drive quite a few times. We moved to the US in '92, with the intention of staying just a few years. 30 years later we are still here and are quite settled.
Regards... Tim
That is a looker of a cover.
Well there you go. I had no idea you were an Aussie!
The cover didn't sell as Cherrystone have included it again in their September sale.
Dave,
If you were to peruse the "Meet The Volunteers" list, Tim's info says, "...originally from Australia"

Is the total of the stamps on this cover the correct amount for such a letter at the time?
Incredible cover.
"Is the total of the stamps on this cover the correct amount for such a letter at the time"

Nice cover!

The listing:
"1931 (14 May) registered cover from Ararat (Victoria) to England, carried on the 2nd Experimental Air Mail flight, incredibly franked with a variety of issues, including the 1913 Engraved 1p, 1918 1p Die III with plate flaw "white wattle below right wattle stem" (ACSC 75N), 1929 Air 3p booklet pane pair, etc., Melbourne transit and arrival pmks on back, minor toning, otherwise fine and spectacular cover with 17 different stamps paying 2sh2p (probably correct) franking. A rare showpiece, full of character
Est.US$750"
The image is from my files, as I first saw this in 2009 when it belonged to Glen Stephens. The interesting this is that I have an almost identical cover, sent on the same day, by the same sender, to the same recipient, with registration number 2026. Mine is missing the Die III, but I only paid A$200 for mine. What I've always wondered is where is the one with the Registration number 2025?
