I can't remeber where I read that the actual bank check with revenue stamp attached during the Spanish-American War, the Bank's dated PAID cancel, and not the date written on the check or the stamp is the actual legal date of the instrument.

Does any member have factual background information?

Don’t know for sure but it makes sense. Once it clears the bank the transaction is complete so that that would become the legal date.
