1898, just so I'm clear, the question translates into: did Canada Post change the perforating pins or their alignment in 1971? And, if so, Was it requested by CP or just a shift by the manufacturers? Is this correct?
@amsd
Sorry I must not have asked this question right.
I'll try again.
Any stamps that can be found using both standards?
1898
If you check the dates of the stamps in Unitrade, you find there are a number of issues where there were printings of the same stamps before and after 1/1/1971.
However you will probably need to contact the printers to know if the perforation machines were changed for the later issues.
@sheepshanks
Aw, my problem I don't have the Unitrade catalog, so I guess I bore people with my silly questions! Sorry everybody if I'm asking to many stupid questions.
So tell me, as I understand it Unitrade is or will be going out of business? What other catalog would have this information in it. Harvey says Scott Catalog doesn't have this type of information.
Seems to me (maybe I'm wrong) a stamp that was printed some 50 years ago, there should be information available but I don't know how to find it, so I ask silly or stupid questions.
1898
Just checked my old 2003 Darnell and it does not give exact issue dates, just the base year, not reprint dates.
There is limited information in Scott, where they give some listings for different printings, within the subsidiary catalogue number listings.
Looks like you may need to spend a few dollars on a Unitrade, unless your local library or stamp club member has a copy.
The Unitrade is definitely the best for giving information that most catalogs don't bother about. I don't think they do any other countries than Canada. The Scott's US specialized gives lots of varieties and for the classic issues it gives a earliest known use date but I don't see production numbers even though their section at the beginning of the book on definitives is excellent. I think there is a lot of information that no catalog can give because no one ever recorded it. For example I have a very rare British Columbia #1 (never issued) and a #3. I would love to know how many were produced but even though Unitrade does give that kind of information nothing seems to be known about production numbers for BC stamps. Unfortunately a lot of data just does not exist! Why? Nobody recorded it as they do now. It's not consistent though since many of the early Canada stamps do have production numbers. If you are a Canada collector I seriously suggest you find a copy of Unitrade before they disappear.
@Harvey
The way stamps are accounted for up in Canada is way different than here in the U.S.
I'm sure must be a record of the total printed for each stamp issue.
I don't know why the Unitrade Catalog doesn't list the basic information, this issue is some 50 years old!

Thanks David, I'll give it a try! A fellow member checked with a specialist on B.C. stamps and he couldn't find numbers for me. I know numbers of newer stamps would be on record somewhere but I'm not too sure about some of the classic items. The BC #1 has a CV that is very high so I doubt if there were a huge number printed. They were never found used so it was probably a small run done as inperforates as an example. One of these days it wouldn't surprise me if Scott's de-listed them!
@Everyone
For the people who don't have a Scott Catalog, here is a scan for Air Post stamps by Scott number and quanity issued!
I guess Unitrade doesn't think this type of information is important to stamp collectors.
Its difficult to make this scan, that why I scanned the Air Post, but there are quanities issued for all Scott Number stamps!
1898
"Unitrade doesn't think this type of information is important to stamp collectors."
@Harvey
So then the total printed 460 is unknown.

Could one of the "men/women in charge" make these two URL's live so I can check them out. I can't seem to get anywhere with them!!
Edit: Managed to get the first link to work but not the second! No numbers were given!

Thanks Roy, a great source of information! But no production numbers were given even though they would normally be with the name of the printer. I doubt very much if the numbers are known, way too many were printed in many forms!
@Harvey
Thank you for this information.
Finally, the 460 was printed by a contract printer, that explains almost everything such as the different die, printing on the gum side etc. and more etc. They all is what is called Freaks, don't know what you all call them, just right and proper Freaks.

My research details the dates before 1 Jan 1971 Canada standard perormation was based on thousands of an inch. Starting 1 Jan 1971 Canada changed over to standard performation based on the metric measurement method.
My question is was there any Candian stamps in production during that time that have both standard performations methods (one in thousands of an inch, and one using the metric method)?
If anybody knows and would not mind providing sharing this information I'd appreciate it.
If you think my question is silly, please do not respond, just wasting your time and my time.
I love stamps and like to talk about them.
Thank You
