For many years I assumed Scott #222-224 (B.I.T.) were overprints of the Centenary of Independence Issue Scott #218-220. I was surprised to read recently that the B.I.T. overprints are in fact different stamps, the names of the painters and the initials of the engraver were added to the bottom of the stamps. Always learning something new.

I would say that Scott considers them a new issue due to the changes made to the earlier stamps. I’ve run into that with even recent U.S. issues. I’ve thought that I had an error or variety only to find that they had different Scott numbers and the differences were on purpose. I need to be smart enough to check the catalog first. LOL
