Very nice example of the 40c Tasman with Ink stripping.
Always good to see in multiples with normal printing of
the other stamp.
Good recent purchase Rob.
Always good to see examples of the Navigator series.
Hi Harro1955
I have many Navigators, pre-decimal and decimal, all in MUH condition. I have scarce and rare overprints, offsets etc. I'll post them for you.
Rob
Good morning Rob,
Yes that would be very interesting to see parts of your Navigator collection.
Do you also collect envelopes ( commercial etc ).
Harro
Hi Harro
I do, but none are of the Navigators, and of course they would need to be commercially used like the other covers I do have, which are rare, one such cover certified as of "great rarity on cover", only two exist and I'm looking for the other.
Rob
Thanks Rob,
yes there is some nice Navigator covers around in collections.
I have some Navigator covers and when time permits I will post some up.
Harro
Hi Harro.
Would like to see them when you can.
I'll use this post to show all the Navigators I have, this will save me reposting as a new post. Here is the rare £2 specimen in central position, less than 50 September 1965 Collector's Pack were issued, The single stamps are the result of a pack being ruined by the removal of this stamp, thus effectively lowing the number issued and sky rocketing the value of this rarity, I have both the single stamp and the pack.
THE RAPID RISE OF THE £2 SPECIMEN IN CENTRAL POSITION
The SPECIMEN overprint positioned in central position is 13.5mm long. Two printings were apparently made – the first overprint positioned in central position and with the second overprint in the extreme lower right corner.
A total of 29 sheets of 120 (3,480 stamps) were supplied by the Note Printing Branch. Only one sheet of 120 stamps was printed with the SPECIMEN overprint positioned in central position.
The Navigator specimens of both positions were not issued singularly, all were originally part of the Collector’s Pack, Specimen Navigators sold singularly was the result of collectors and stamp dealers (the latter being the worst culprit) pulling the pack apart to sell the high value specimen.
Many of both overprints were hinged and not all the packs were sold and later destroyed by the Post Office. It is estimated from 120 Collector packs housing the rare stamp, only 20 of these packs exist intact today, and only 50 of the singular £2 with central overprint exist.
The market interest of this rare stamp had skyrocketed in recent years, it’s rarity on the philatelic stage finally realized.
2015 - $475
2019 - $750
2021 - $1,250
Link showing increase (you will need to highlight and copy the link).
https://www.stampcommunity.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=79511&SearchTerms=1965,specimen
In six years this rare stamp increased by $775.
SEPTEMBER 1965 COLLECTOR’S PACK
This rare pack contains both the white paper 10/- and £1 white paper specimens, whilst the £2 is the rare central overprint. All lower denominational stamps, including those from the Cocos (Keeling Islands) and the Australian Antarctic Territory have the “SE 65” CTO. The last release of the pre-decimal folders. The £2 with central overprint was an emergency stamp added late in the year as a result of the depletion of the £2 with the overprint at bottom right of the stamp. Only 120 packs were offered for sale with the rare £2.
Many of these packs were later withdrawn and destroyed straight after decimalisation on February 14, 1966 (Valentine’s Day). And every time a £2 with the central overprint is offered for sale, a collector’s pack was destroyed.
Very Nice Rob , I was looking at purchasing the collectors pack but it was sold by the time I went back to purchase. Should have had it put aside by seller.
That's life I will keep hunting.
Harro
That's a pity, these packs are rare. I bought the folder in 2015. There were two types of collector folders, the folder with the £2 specimen on the bottom right and this one, currently I do not have the folder with the £2 specimen on the bottom right.
Rob
Yes It was the Collectors Pack with the £2 Navigator centred that I missed out on.
Harro
They are seldom on the market, but there is always that chance one will come along.
Strong off-set on gummed side.
Another nice example of Offset Rob,
Yes the only Navigators that I have not seen an example of Offset to date is the 75c Cook and the $2 Bass.
Harro
There is no record of any offset for the 75c Cook and $2.00 Bass listed in the ACSC (Brusden White) catalogue, that doesn't mean though that there are no unlisted offsets. I'm looking for the rare 50c offset on the face of the stamp, very seldom seen, though I have seen one a few years ago.
Yes the 75c Cook and $2 Bass are not listed and I have never seen any examples out there yet.
I actually purchased the Offset on the Face of the 50c Dampier that is listed in the ACSC that belonged to Mr. Bryan Young the consultant editor to Brusden White for the 2002 edition of ACSC in 2017. I will post this and some of my items as soon as time permits.
Harro
50c Dampier with Offset on Face of stamp.
Offsets on this stamp are extremely Rare. The cause of this particular variety may have been a paper fold during printing or two sheets may have been stacked face to face. This particular example was purchased in 2017 from the collection of the late Mr. Bryan Young the consultant editor of the 2002 Brusden White Decimal Catalogue.
This one took me 9 years to track down.
Hi Harro
I can see the offset, but It's a little too small to actually see the details, I haven't seen one close-up, is it possible to enlarge it a little. That is one off-set I will keep an eye out for.
Rob
This should give a clearer view of the offset on the face Rob.
That frontal offset in my opinion is the best in the Navigation series and one of the most sought varieties in the QEII pre-decimal era, and it's in excellent condition, this variety has always been on the top of my list. I have a few KGVI stamps from the Arthur Gray estate.
Rob
Yes Rob, it is indeed a very interesting example 50c Dampier with Offset on Face and yes it is in Superb condition being MUH to boot.
I have some interesting examples of varieties of the Decimal Navigators some listed but others are not.
My wife goes into hospital tomorrow so as soon as I have time I can post some more varieties up.
Harro
Tomorrow I'll be getting a £2 Navigator with a re-entry at top right of the stamp. I'll post it the moment it arrives. Hope your wife is okay.
Rob
Sounds interesting, please post when you have time.
Harro
It hasn't arrived yet, hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to show the re-entry.
Rob
Here is the very scarce £2 Navigator with the weak entry at the top right corner.
Nice Pickup Rob. Looks very close proximity to the Roller Shift error for the £2 Navigator.
Harro
Lovely 40c Tasman Marginal top right corner block of 4 with stamps 1/5 and 1/6 showing extensive degrees ink stripping
causing degrees missing frames and areas of design on both theses stamps. Stamps 4/1 and 4/2 not affected. Separation
of perfs in centre.
40c Tasman Marginal corner block of 4 with "Strong Offset" Varying Degrees of offset exist in the 40c Tasman with this being of the stronger type.
again a very nice purchase from the collection of Mr Bryan Young in 2017.
These examples are rare and are not seen often in multiples .
Very nice varieties. Multiples are indeed rare. I've been looking for multiple varieties, have a few, but not much in the Navigator series.
Yes Rob, they are very hard to source these unusual multiples and Unlisted Varieties that form my collection of Navigators. It has taken me some 20 years since I started collecting. I will post some unlisted 40c Tasman's later on tonight.
Harro
This is an interesting Paper fold of 40c Tasman that I picked up in 2015. First reported by Dr. Lolliga in Stamp Monthly August 1971.
Displays very nice on the page.
A very nice marginal strip of 6 40c Tasman with Ink Stripping to R5/S6,7,8,9,10 affecting the Denomination and part of the design.
Purchased from the Late Mr. Bryan Young's collection in 2017. This strip is very similar to Arthur Grays strip from his sale in Jan 2017.
Superb varieties, I will soon focus more on the Navigator series and its varieties. I have a few rare Arthur Gray's stamps, but they aren't Navigators. I will upload the sets I have on the Navigator series soon.
Rob
Have a Merry Christmas Rob to you and your Family.
Harro
A rather extraordinary Upper sheet Left Pane block of 15 40c Tasman Navigators with Listed Varieties 460d , 460e , MC1,MC2,MC3,MC4, plus Unlisted Varieties Lines inside and above head R1/S1 , plus 2 diagonal lines inside and above head R1/S4.
The amazing find with this block is the Plate No. 1 to the Right of the Perf Pip. Purchased in 2015.
You have many superb varieties, and it's obvious you are very committed to the Navigator series. I have a few more to show which I will soon upload. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Robert
Yes I am a collector of Navigators 1963-1974 and have collected many listed almost All of ACSC listed Varieties and also McCleary.
I used to collect Australian Decimal and errors and varieties but sold 90% of the collection about 12 years ago.
I have always loved the Navigators since i seen the first release of pre-decimal when I was a young boy.
I look forward to your posts be they Navigators or Pre-decimal QE11 etc.
Harro
Missing Colour 40c Tasman , I have only seen one other of these in a Status International Auction in a Specialised decimal collection. I have a picture of the item in the Auction but did not record the auction or date. a very nice item and I just need to Authenticate the Genuine aspect of the stamp. item purchased in 2012 from Lonesdale Thomas a chap in Springwood NSW.
I have pictured the stamp with a normal coloured blue Tasman example.
That is quite an interesting stamp. never seen anything like it. The only expertiser qualified to identify that stamp is Chris Ceramuga. But you may have to wait months for the return of the stamp.
Rob.
Here is another example of the 40c Tasman Navigator Ink Stripping with the 40c Denomination nearly obliterated.
Here we have an Unlisted Variety of the 40c Taman Navigator that I have not seen another anywhere. It is the Missing Electro Flaw 460d Upper Sheet Left Pane marginal block of 6. It has ACSC Listed Varieties 460e MC3 ( Recutting Lines Left of Head ) , MC1 ( Horizontal Lines Inside Top Frame ) , MC2 ( Start of Blue Mark on collar & Diagonal lines Inside the first "A" in Australia) but the missing Left Seriff on the "U" is STILL INTACT.
Recut between sails and Flinders' eye and state II.
Very interesting block of 6 40c Tasmans.
The Plate Fracture ACSC 463ha is always an interesting Plate variety.
I have been trying to locate a Used version of this variety for over 15 years
but without any success.
Getting both "h" and "ha" in MUH was not easy to find, I bought "h" in 2015, and "ha" in 2018.
In the 2019 ACSC it says "Varieties h/ha and j are on the same electro. Variety h corrected a weak band running across the unit resulting in the rigging on the sails being weak or missing. The extensive recutting to correct this, so weakened the plate that a crystalline fracture subsequently developed, which zig-zags across the main-mast and sails for 4.5mm (variety ha."
I do not have "j", it shows a recut shading over "TR" of "AUSTRALIA".
Yes it took me also many years to collect my examples of this Variety in MNH.
I actually have a 463ha with Dry Ink / Ink Stripping it is a very striking example.
I have 2 x Examples of the Variety 463j actually unlisted different stages
purchased from the brother of a collector of a comprehensive collection of
Navigators in 2019. He owned an earthmoving business in Inverell NSW and
passed away that year.
Harro
As soon as I get some time I will post some Pictures of the 463ha and the 463j.
Harro
Here are the various variety insert photos of the Block of 6 Tasman 460d above. I have these provided these photos to show the different varieties of this block together with the intact serif.
A rare and possibly unique ink-stripping giving a foggy or misty sea effect of Abel Tasman’s flagship the Heemskerck is emerging from. The stamp on the left was not affected. The entire right side is badly affected, the 40c value nearly gone.
