German made early 20th century fake, used before Offsett printing was used to fake stamps.

Newspaper stamp NP1, in my experience (I'm not an expert) these german fakes are real good, of course itt's easy to tell they are fake!

I would assume that having a german word printed on a US stamp ought to be a clear indicator that it is not legit. Poor print quality is also a classic sign of a forgery.

I had both many years ago and the fakes are perfect (no German words) I seem to recall the way to tell is the perfs - real are perf 12, all the fakes were 13? (can't remember)

I believe the allusion is to a "shade tree mechanic," someone who performs auto maintenance and repair at home for themselves and/or friends. An amateur.
Presumably this has become more rare in the age of fault codes and computer-controlled everything.
