One of the more enjoyable aspects of stamp collecting for me, is discovering the history behind the stamps!

Fulbert Youlou was a Congolese Roman Catholic priest who petitioned the Vatican to become secularized so that he could pursue a career as a politician. He served as the 2nd Prime Minister of the Congo from December 8, 1959, to November 21, 1959, under the French Equatorial Africa administration. He was elected as the 1st President of the Republic of the Congo upon their independence on August 15, 1960. On July 31, 1963, just prior to the end of his Presidency (August 15, 1963), a stamp was issued depicting the City Hall at Brazzaville and Youlou's portrait in the upper right-hand corner. However, after public disorders protesting President Youlou's government, this stamp was quickly withdrawn from sale on August 15, 1963. It was on sale for only 15 days! He died at the age of 54 on May 6, 1972.
