Check the Scott Cat. and see if a cheap stamp only comes on soft paper, use this as a go/no go guage.

Good luck. I can't do it. Even when I had a stamp known to be wove paper and another known to be porous to use as a baseline. Tried the "flick test" and tried to ID some Banknotes. Sent a couple off for cert and was only 50/50. A coin flip. Sent the rest off for certs (10 total) and I think I was barely better than 50/50. I'm just glad that I'm done with that!
Laid paper is simple however where I seem to struggle is with the soft porous paper. Any tips or tricks?
