Did you know that Inauguration Day wasn't always January 20?

Up to 1933, Presidential Inauguration Day was traditionally held on March 4. This date was established to allow ample time for the Electoral College votes to be counted and for the incoming administration to transition smoothly. It allowed for the slower communication and transportation methods in the early days of the United States.

The change to the current inauguration date, January 20, occurred due to the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, ratified in 1933. This amendment shortened the "lame-duck" period between administrations. Franklin D. Roosevelt was the last president inaugurated on March 4, in 1933, and the first to be inaugurated on January 20, for his second term in 1937.

re: US Presidential Inaugurations -- did you know?

You are right Roy. I happen to collect Presidential Inauguration covers. I have them all from the first with a Inauguration date of March 4 1929 Herbert Hoover cover all the way to Joe Biden. Hope to have the new Trump cover in a few weeks. I've never seen or heard of a cover for Calvin Coolidge with the Inauguration date of March 4 1923.

re: US Presidential Inaugurations -- did you know?

Do you mean March 4, 1925?

His 1923 swearing in was at a private ceremony at home in Vermont on August 3, 1923, the day after Warren Harding died.

I have never heard of, or seen a 1925 either.

re: US Presidential Inaugurations -- did you know?

Once again you are right Roy. Warren G. Harding was Inaugurated on March 4, 1921 and died August 2, 1923. I have a book called, Hail to the Chief, by Glenn D. Kittler. It,s about all the Inauguration days of the Presidents from 1789 to 1965, very interesting read.
