Wow!
Amazing!

I am a huge fan of folk music and one of my favourites is The Ballad of Ira Hayes by Peter La Farge. The native American marine Ira Hayes was one of the flag raisers shown in the picture. He didn't end up having a hero's death though! Very sad story!!
"Three of the six Marines in the photograph—Sergeant Michael Strank, Corporal Harlon Block, and Private First Class Franklin Sousley—would be killed in action during the battle; Block was identified as Sergeant Hank Hansen until January 1947 and Sousley was identified as PhM2c. John Bradley, USN, until June 2016.[1] The other three Marines in the photograph were Corporals (then Privates First Class) Ira Hayes, Harold Schultz, and Harold Keller; Schultz was identified as Sousley until June 2016[1] and Keller was identified as Rene Gagnon until October 2019.[2] All of the men served in the 5th Marine Division on Iwo Jima"
Johnny Cash does a good version of that song as well.
Great cover Roy. My son is an active duty Infantry Marine. Took pictures of my boy in front of the Iwo Jima statue when I went to his graduation at Parris Island.

I do like the Johnny Cash version of the Ballad of Ira Hayes and also the version by Bob Dylan but my favourite by far is a version by a not well known folk singer by the name of Patrick Skye. It's worth looking for if you're into that kind of thing. He's of Irish and native American ancestry and is worth checking out! I'm also a huge fan of Phil Oakes but he never recorded this song and, since there are many US veterans here, I would really hesitate recommending someone who has done so many protest songs. I had a few friends from my home town in Nova Scotia who went to the US to sign up and I have great respect for anyone in the armed forces who went through what they went through. Their stories of what they went through in Vietnam were incredibly gruesome! If this is too close to being political please ignore the post!
