Could we see a scan please!
@1899,
Thanks for the interest but at this time scans (front or back) are not needed. I'm just trying to find out what the catalog says. Thank you!
Gotta love Google powered by AI...

Here's my used #72. The photo isn't great because I just cropped it from a picture of the page of stamps, the blue colour doesn't really show well. I have a price listed of $600 from an older version of Scott's.

The stamp looks a bit nicer on its page, the blue shows up much better. I posted this a few weeks ago when I added to the page. Some real pretty stuff here. The color variations don't show up very well and most of the prices are about 10 years old.

Ernie,
This is something you see a lot with AI. The AI gave you what appears to be a definitive answer but it was nonsense. If you had replied -- no way could those values be correct, I bet it would have apologized for making such a silly mistake.
The 2022 Scott Stamp values by grade for a used S.72 are:
VG (50)....... $150
F (70)......... $265
F-VF (75).... $400
VF (80)....... $575
VF-XF (85)... $875
XF (90)........$1350
XF-Sup (95)..$4500
And I doubt that they have changed more than a few bucks in the three years since this publication. Also I don't think AI was able to use any Scott catalogue valuations as they are not online or available to train AI or there would be no more printed catalogues needed.
Below is an image of my S.72:

Harvey and Jack,
Thanks guys. Much appreciated. I was wondering if it was possible that the value had jumped up THAT much. Mine is coming! More to follow...
The "keep in mind.." in the search comment shows much about the AI. It comes across as paid ad.
I have a 2025 US Specialized real physical book - it says $625 for a used 72 in the main listings. Interestingly, the grading section says $575 for a VF 80.
Josh
This is somewhat surprising to me. Few would argue that U.S. Scott # 72 is not a 19th century classic yet the value hasn't budged since 2015??? Not a good investment.
An online source of price/values for U.S. classic stamps is this:
http://psestamp.com/prices/
Below is how they (PSE) value a Scott 72 (and its variants):

PSE also has something they call SMQ (stamp market quarterly) that is similar to the last post but with this you can just enter a Scott number and get their take on current value (I hate to sound like an adv for PSE -- they are primarily a certification service with optional grading and make a fair number of mistakes -- so caveat emptor on their certs)
https://gradingmatters.com/us.html
(the link above takes awhile to open like 10 seconds for me)
If you ask for 72 you get this:

Ernie,
Here is what you originally asked for. But of course I'm a little late to this party. Sorry about that I'm recovering from my hip replacement. The value listed in the 2025 U.S. Specialized values by grade is $575 in VF80 condition. Of course that is for a used stamp. I hope this helps.
Banknoteguy is on to something. If its free its for me. The link to PSE's values is in my opinion are likely closer to what the market actually reflects as being accurate.
Jeremy
Jeremy,
Thank you! I appreciate that. Wishing you a speedy and complete recovery from your surgery.
Ernie
Anytime!!! Thank you for the well wish.
Jeremy
1899,
I honestly beleive that if Ernie here, had been able to scan the 2025 scott page, he would have had no need to post this question here.
What does a scan do here?
Most US collectors, (not all) know a 90c washington type as a #72
PhilatelistMag20
Correct!
Not my stamp (wish it was) from an auction site

Only described as VF used
Asking $500

Really nice copy of the stamp, great colour, great centering, not much of a postmark! It's probably worth the $500.
There's no way a stamp that faces up that nice fetches only $500 on the open market. Not possible. Buy it immediately and id like to see scans front and back.
If you have it now I'll pay $600 pronto.
Here is the reverse:

@ernieinjax
You know it does not hurt to offer seller a lower price maybe $400 to srart with!
Well,
It finally arrived. Scott # 72. Someone should stage an intervention on me. I'm spending way too much on stamps! The last three that I purchased have been 70, 71 and 72. Postcards are way easier on the pocketbook.
Since we discussed so much about value and price, I am inviting the group to comment on my deal. Be honest; let me know what you think. I paid:
Subtotal: $320.00
Shipping: $3.50
Sales Tax: $24.26
Order Total: $347.76

IMHO it wasn't a steal but I think you did very well! The cancel is very light, four margins and the blue colour is really nice. I can't remember where I got mine and how much it cost but your copy is better than mine. I know what you mean about spending a lot of money on stamps but remember "no matter how much you want to, you can't take it with you"!! I've been spending like crazy lately as well but I've been picking up great stuff as well!
Thanks Harvey. "Can't take it with you" indeed! Not sure if I'm going to keep it or not. Love the way it faces up but I have detected a small, sealed tear on the bottom. So two small thins and definitely some perf issues.
The seller already said he'd take it back for a full refund.

Ernie, sorry about the problems with the stamp!! Do you think the seller knew?
Probably....he's a very prolific seller on eBay. I'm sure you've seen his stuff. He's got some BEAUTIFUL stock. I'll send you a PM with his username. No reason to publicly flame a seller. He's one of these sellers that won't describe the condition or divulge faults. They hide behind a "100% refund". In my mind, that's obvious. Thats a cop out in my opinion. Hes hoping it will go unnoticed or the buyer wont care. Most serious collectors would automatically reject a $320+ stamp with a tear. Not quite sure what I'll do. Its pretty, but also pretty faulty.
Ernie, I was with Harvey: not a steal but a good price for a great LOOKING stamp. UNTIL you described the three flaws, including a tear. Now, it's definitely NOT a good price, but is still a good LOOKING stamp. I'd consider it a good filler, but not at that price.
David,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. Yeah, I sent it back yesterday. Very frustrating. I only spend that kind of money on a stamp a few times a year and I usually end up doing a great deal of searching before I do. Back to the drawing board AND I'm out the freight costs each way. Ugh.
Good to hear you sent that stamp back. Nice looking but with hidden faults, I think you definitely made the right decision. I believe it was also reperfd on the right side.
I would suggest that if you were willing to spend that much you should consider bidding in a good auction e.g., below is an S.72 that Siegel sold in an auction about 3 months ago. They graded it VF and it had a good cert. Hammer was $300 so out the door with shipping maybe $400.

Hi Jack,
I agree. As the financial exposure goes up, eBay's value as a resource goes down. At least with a major auction house they generally disclose all faults. My hard and fast rule for my U.S. used singles collection is a face-free or exceedingly light cancel.
By the way, as I was typing this the stamp in the upper right corner of SoR was 72. This stamp would not fit in my collection...

@ernieinjax
My suggestion only!
Buy/bid on a certificate for #72
If my math is correct 72 are 164 years old
If this helps
again just my suggestion

Could someone please give me the latest Scott catalog value (preferably 2025) for U.S. # 72 used (90c blue Washington). I have a 2015 copy and it says $600. I'm very curious to know if it has changed much if at all. Thank you so much.
Ernie
