I’ve made some progress on my question. The internet now has considerably more information about airport dedications than it used to have. Apparently they were normally done on the day the airport opened. I have no idea why it took so long in Silver City.

Can anyone tell me anything about this this cover?

I grew up in Silver City. The airport was opened in 1950, although scheduled airline service (Frontier Airlines, flying DC-3s) didn't start until 1951. Attempts to reach the airport in 1950 were thwarted by poor weather over the Burro Mountains. I know this history because my father, who was editor of the weekly Silver City Enterprise, covered the story and even got a ride in the DC-3s jump seat.
Why did it take more than six years to have the airport dedication. For that matter, what is an airport dedication. That sounds like a silly question, I know, but...did sky pilots from the Protestant and Catholic faiths (there were no Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, or Buddhists) bless the airport to prevent crashes?
This particular cover isn't in my collection, but I have a similar one which has always puzzled me. Perhaps you can unpuzzle me!
