I sure did from a historical perspective. But I could help cringing when the man/auctioneer speaking was handling the subject material with his bare hands and not white gloving it. Especially for the cover that was sent to Abraham Lincoln or presumably it was and it is coming for for action in the future. In my mind that is a big no no. But other than that it is a very informative youtube video.

Here's an interesting article about handling things with white gloves.

That is an interesting article.
Thanks for the article, most interesting.
Also true (white gloves link) - I had a couple of friends dealing in 18th and early 19th century paper, art and ephemeral items. They were both experts and made a part of their living authenticating colonial autographs and documents, doing appraisals for major auction houses and universities, etc. Both also loved early postal history and stamps.
I had the privilege of being exposed to and discussing a lot of historically important and fascinating documents in their stock (mostly sold through private treaty). Never once did I see either of them don gloves in handling anything - nor did either of them ever hesitate to hand me anything for a closer look.
Stamp thongs seem like a common sense answer to gloves.
