efo center line in toga button appears like an "S" shape!

My guess unknown what caused this odd shape.

EFO, area around head front and back, no cross hatching visible, appears part of the head in back not visible somewhat.

@1899, regarding the relief break on Scott 498.

The relief is not used on the press, but rather to make the plates that actually print the stamps. The printing plates are not reliefs. John Hotchner's column in the September Scott Stamp monthly describes the process, as does the introduction in the Scott US Specialized.

I'm also unsure why you qualify the relief break as detached. What would an undetached break be?
