None of my mail to the USA has been opened, checked or tariffed !! Yet !
Nor should it be.

It was opened because it is in a padded mailer and does not carry a CN22 Customs declaration form.
It is actually surprising that Canada Post 1) accepted it at the counter as lettermail (rather than a "small packet" or "tracked packet") and 2) was not returned from an intermediate transit point by Canada Post. In the early days of the "no merchandise" policy for lettermail, we had many bulky "letters" returned that previously went through just fine. Now, we no longer try.
It is exactly this kind of package that the US has been concerned with carrying fentanyl and the very reason that the EO of Aug 29 removed the de minimis and called for a formal declaration on all packages.

Thanks Roy
It's the first one I've received opened, also the first one in a padded envelope.

I.got a very similar padded letter a few weeks ago. Also from Dorchester. It went through the system without any checks. I suppose the Dutch government is not that concerned about bulky letters.
I remember some 10 years ago I listed a set of fishing spoons on Ebay thinking they will not have to go very far in the country. Someone in the USA bought them!
Those were 5 spoons of some 30g each and now I had to ship them. I put them in a regular envelope between two cards, paid the postage for a letter of 200g to USA and thought, most likely I will end up refunding this purchase to the buyer.
They arrived!
But I am not listing spoons on Ebay ever again.
What a rotten day so far! Goodness knows what the third thing will be!!
1) Well IT happened.
The Royal Mail charged me customs duty for sending Canadian stamps to the USA despite giving them the HS code 9407.00.00.00!!
I shall use a phrase that we use in Old Caledonia "They are nothing but a bunch of Hooks, Crooks and Comic Singers!"
2) Finally an auction company sent me an invoice declaring they would accept Bank Transfer or Debit/Credit Card or cheque but they would prefer Bank Transfer. (quite reasonable you would say)
UH! UH!
There are no banks in Brechin, the nearest is 14 miles away. In their email was the phrase do not phone as "Donald cannot do payments!!" So the Debit/Credit card option was out!
So the only option is to send a cheque. ( It took me half an hour to find my cheque book) It was last used 4 years ago!!
Please let the third item be one that has a very easy simple solution!!

Things are not good in Canada either! I don't sell but occasionally I send gifts to SOR people in the US. The last two such gifts are out there in limbo somewhere. I have no trouble sending to Canada but when the border is involved ... well, it ain't pretty!!!
I've had great luck so far this year buying lots from Canadians. Travel time has been 7-10 days with no issues.
This is what customs tape looks like. Item was mailed from Dorchester Ontario on Jan 20th and arrived in upstate NY on Jan 30th ( 220 miles). Contents (foreign stamps) were undamaged and intact. No invoice was present. It was sent in a padded mailer. Just a heads up .......
