I am thinking of subscribing to Linn's. Just wondering how many of you have print as opposed to digital. I know that the digital version is much cheaper and delivery is timely. I am torn as I still like to have something to flip through and keep.

Thanks

re: Linn's (print or digital?)

I have a digital subscription which I try to read on my iPad (I don't like reading on my computer at my desk). It's not formatted for the iPad, so the reading experience is less than ideal. Until changes in formatting are made, I'd stick with the print edition.

Bob

P.S. Just to let you know, I read a lot of other material on my iPad, and like it a great deal. Formatting is everything!

re: Linn's (print or digital?)

I have been subscribing to Linns since 1946. Like to read my paper while eating, and never on the computer.
The old newspaper size was a bit difficult to manage, but current magazine size is great.
I am a "clipper", and like to tear out the articles I like to save, so my suggestion is to get the print issues.

re: Linn's (print or digital?)

Thanks for the responses Bob and Richaard. I may go for the digital version as the $59 is a little steep for my budget at this point. I have a netbook computer so I can access it hopefully without formatting issues.

re: Linn's (print or digital?)

Vince,

I'm halfway with Richaard in that I like to save articles and such also. However, with the online version you can print out what you want - page by page - without actually destroying an issue.

I have a print subscription, which now INCLUDES the online version at the same price and also includes a few other online issues as well-
Scott Stamp Monthly (now included with printed version also);
Scott Stamp Valuing Supplement (by grade);
a Stamp Product Guide;
Coin World;
Coin Values;
...and coin product guide.

I find that the combination of both online and print versions covers all I need and want from their weekly paper...
...but - this is just a matter of personal preference.
( I look to checking the actual mailbox - the 'real' one - to see in my Linn's has arrived each week; guess I'm just old-school in that regard!)

...one more thing -

at $59 a year, that's LESS than $5 a month;
how much do we pay for our internet connections?
...or our cell phones?
...Or anything else nowadays?

I'd say that's pretty cheap, esp. with getting BOTH versions.

However, I DO understand many of us work within a budget limit (myself included)!

Thanks Randy!

You have now made my decision harder ( in a good way). I like to check my mail too. Makes it feel like I am getting a present. As an archivist, I like dealing with the tangible (real stuff). By the way, I see you are in Michigan. I am a Michigander myself who relocated to Houston due to a job opportunity. I hope it isn't too cold there. Still miss what I consider home. I lived in Belleville and worked at U of M in Ann Arbor.

re: Linn's (print or digital?)

Scott Stamp Monthly no longer exists. It has been replaced by Linn's Stamp News which is newspaper type paper within a glossy cover. Older digital copies of Scott Stamp Monthly are available on line through Linn's archive service.

With Linn's improved website you can now print off a page or an article you would like to keep instead of having piles of magazines in your possession.

Liz is correct.
S.S.M. has been incorporated and since dissolved into Linn's issues once a month.

If you have a pdf print driver, you can select it in the dropdown list in your print dialog and bypass the step of printing to paper. (Just in case you don't really want a paper copy of everything you would like to keep...you can always print out the pdf, later.)

Mine happens to come with HotDocs, but there are all sorts of free ones out there.

Speaking of money for this hobby, I wonder how many of you people on this board purchased the 2011 Scott catalogs?
Mine are 2008.
I go to my library where they get the new catalogs every year, and take out the volumes that I need. They allow two weeks, but if no one is waiting, one can renew over the phone for another two weeks.

re: Linn's (print or digital?)

I purchased one volume 3 of the 2011 Scott Catalogue and several individual country 2011 Scott catalogue pages that a fellow in the USA sells on eBay. He takes new catalogues and cuts them up into individual country pages.

Our little library doesn't have catalogues of any kind, so going to the library is not an option for me.

re: Linn's (print or digital?)

Linn's - print versus digital.... I also really like the Linn's print version and delayed changing over because I liked "real paper and the portability". However, real paper piles up and clipping articles and saving them takes time. I have been digital only now for a year and really like it because:

1. No papers to mess with - clipping, filing, recycling
2. All issues that are digital are easily accessible any time the internet is working (sometimes an issue in tiny rural areas like where I live)
3. I can search for articles later on
4. My issues are no longer torn or damaged when they arrive
5. They are never late or lost
6. It is much less expensive
7. I can read it at work too (during break time)
8. I do the newsletter for our local stamp club - the digital version arrives much sooner and I can mention "breaking news" in our newsletter.

Things I miss: getting the paper out of the mailbox. Don't get much mail worth reading anymore, but in my mind, this is a tiny little thing far outweighed by all the good things....

Scott Catalogues: Haven't bought a new one since 2002. Our library always has the current year and the last two in circulation. We can have them for 3 weeks at a time and renew them (phone or internet) for another 3 weeks if no one else is waiting. Our library also gets our club copy of the APS Journal, but that's another story.

One additional thing I like about the digital edition is having the ability to increase the print size...a nice feature for aging eyes!
