Larry,
Hello. I house my covers in stackable plastic drawers which can be purchased at any such place ranging from office supplies store to Wal-Mart. Covers of various size can be stored standing upright on their bottom edge with note cards serving as dividers between categories. I also put all my covers in plastic sleeves. The price difference for sleeves are due primarily to the thickness. I have been most happy with the 2mm kind. 1mm is too flimsy. More than 2mm is unnecessary from a protection stand point -- unless you would handle the item heavily, like in a dealer's box.
I have been buying most of my cover sleeves locally from dealers at stamp shows, so I cannot recommend a good online source. There are really good and inexpensives sleeves available for postcards online, but for cover sizes I have not found a good online source. Some of the covers offered as "FDC" size also are definitely too small, and hardly fit a standard FDC. I am currently on the road (posting this from the airport in Charlotte), but can post some names of manufacturers here when I get back home in a few days.

Late response, but I get mine from Brooklyn Gallery.

FDC, do you know if those are archival quality?
David
I make my own using archival sleeves I get from Walmart and then I cut them to size to fit my page.
Works well for me as I need so many. I get 100 sheets at a time and cut them up to fit, usually two mounts from each page. Perry
perry, tell me how you do this? what's the process; what's the cost?
David
Walmart, Target and other discount stores sell clear plastic sleeves used by students 8.5 x 11. They are acid free and then I take a #11 exacto knife and with a clear plastic ruler cut on glass around the envelopes or display item of size. Allow just enough extra around the item so you can hot iron the open end shut. Perry

Sorry to respond so late on this but I am new to the list and just discovered THEMES and the archives.
Ron Playle has a very good website and excellent prices.

Perry,
I love your creative way of thinking. I wish I had the luxury of time so that I could make my own custom size sleeves. As it stands I work an 80 hour week just on my collection. I have over 22,000 covers that need to be archived. So I buy huge quantities from Playle. The same sleeves are sold by a few dealers on EBAY for more money.
I hope this source is helpful to those looking for reasonably priced sleeves. Playle sells all sizes.
All the best,
John
I'm new to covers but am finding that storing them in binders is bulky. I'm thinking about shoe boxes or something similar and using protective plastic sleeves. The fact that they are all shapes and sizes adds to the storage problem. How do others handle this? If I use sleeves, where should I get them and what should I watch out for? I found some at one place for under $3 per hundred and another was $28 per hundred. Would appreciate hearing about different ways to store and organize. Thanks.
