Ah,,,to tell a story,requires more data.
which oldest cover?
Stampless, affixed stamp cover, prestamped cover, world wide, certain country,or does letter sheet count too.
Ceasar often sent letter sheet(scroll ) with his seal closeing it.
Does pigeon mail count?
Or are we talking postal authority sactioned mail only?
I'd love to hear about all of the above.
TOM
OK, let's say a cover with a stamp on it postmarked,
just for starters.
Okay, I do not have the story on the cover itself but the letter was handed to me by a customer as a "gift" because she knew I was a stamp collector. Her mother was a collector. Of course I immediately told her it had value and eventually purchased it from her. The letter inside is dated April 12th 1850. Unfortunately the letter was folded but due to the blue cancel and double imprint cancel I thought it worth having. Anyway, I'll start this thread with my oldest US cover, US #1. Perry
Great cover Perry - I envy your possession regardless of condition these are rarely seen.

US stamps were issued 7 years after UK stamps, so the earliest stamped cover is likely to be 1840. i have none in my collection, unfortunately

Here is Perry's US cover that he mentioned above.
I have this envelope in a safe deposit box so anyone who NEEDS further images please contact me via email. I"ll retrieve it and rescan as soon as I can.
Another view of the stamp and cancel....contrast added.
How about May 21st, 1850 with wax seal. Pulled this letter out of the safety deposit box to scan the return address............................
My oldest stamped cover is from York, PA with a Scott 10A -- the letter is dated August 19, 1851.
On the stampless front, my oldest is this one sent from Boston in November 1803:
LOVE THE 1803..............................and the image Poddle Mum submitted Of Mine is quite accurate to color and density.
My oldest US Cover is the stampless dated Aug 24, 1797, but it is only the outer folded sheet. The contents are not included.
My oldest stamped cover - 1848 with Washington, DC CDS
Outstanding cover Bobby, nice stamp on cover.......Perry
Sweet cover Bobby. It is amazing the letter is still with the cover and both are in good condition.
My oldest, 1856
I am in awe over all these covers. I think I missed the boat, I have been collecting, hoarding, stockpiling, etc, etc, etc for 60 years and never got interested in covers. I can only imagine what I could have if I had interest in them 60 years ago. I have some, but round file stuff compared to these. Accolades to all of you for seeing the historical value. Speechless I am.....

Stallzer,
