This note is really for Tim, but I am posting here so that others may support or oppose the suggestion.

I would like to see the auction thumbnails increased from the current 75 pixel size to 120 pixels.

I believe this would make browsing the auction pages much more informative, and actually save time by not having to "click in" to see an item close up to see what it actually is.

I don't believe this would put a strain on users' internet connections (it certainly wouldn't strain the server). The average file size of the current thumbnails appears to be about 5kB. Increasing these from 75px to 120px would increase that file size, on average, to about 12.5kB. Based on an auction listing page of 100 items (which is what I have mine set at), that would increase the total picture download from 500kB to 1.25MB per page -- on high speed, I'd never notice the difference. I presume most dialup users would be set to 40 items per page and they would see per page download sizes increase from 200kB to 500kB per page -- still a reasonable size that would finish downloading long before one could reach the end of the page browsing.

As a sample, I grabbed a random item from the auction. Here is the current thumbnail, and my suggested size, side by side:

I believe the page layout could also easily support the larger thumbnail with no changes.

I would even support an increase to 150 pixels, but that might be pushing the dialup people.

re: Suggestion: Larger Auction thumbnails

I have made the change as per Roy's suggestion. All thumbnails created by the system are now 120px rather than 75px. I have loaded a test lot so you can see what the larger thumbnails look like. The larger thumbnails only apply as new lots are added to the Auction.

Please let me know if you see any problems caused by this change.

Regards ... Tim.
