I recently received some Berlin stamps that are in the Michel catalogue that are Zusammendruck (?) & could use some personal guidance with terminology & identification of them. My German is rudimentary & I'm having difficulty with these - any help would be greatly appreciated. Please message me at SOR or faithseeker at gmail.com if you have a little bit of time & patience to walk me through some of them.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Kelly,
I have the German-English Philatelic Dictionary, so I can help you with some terms. Also, Google has free translation services and can be helpful, but sometimes stumble over philatelic jargon. I will be glad to help you with terms if you send me a list.
Regards,
Terry

Zusammendruck = se-tenant printing

FYI, Michel has a little 16 page booklet that is an English guide to the Michel catalogs. Subway Stamp Shop sells it for around $1 or so.

Thanks, Jan-Simon. Wonderful book. Very helpful. I picked up a few older Michel books in an estate sale intending someday to look up some German words. This booklet goes beyond translation of words to deciphering the schema. Thanks!

re: Need some help with German terms in Michel

Hmmm... someone have stock in Michel???

I have found that using Scott, Gibbons and Michel gives a good, round overview of the stamps. Each catalog covers the hobby slightly different. Michel in particular lists more local issues than the other two and provides more information regarding printing quantities, varieties and counterfeits. Gibbons lists stamps from modern sets individually and provides listings of British stamps not covered by Scott.

Use the non-standard catalogs as reference. The main catalog set would be for valuation purposes (except for issues not listed), depending where you live (such as Scott in the US. That way you can buy older editions of the other catalogs (Gibbons and Michel, for example if you lived in the US) and save plenty of money!
