United States/Covers & Postmarks : How do you appraise the value of cacheted covers?

I have a group of specially drawn cachets on first day covers; some of these cachet makers are listed in Mellone, but my catalogue is from 2007 and these are all 2008 issues. How does one evaluate these cacheted covers, not so much for potential sale (although some duplicates will be offered at some time so that would be helpful too!) but more just for interest?

Here are examples of such featured covers.

And some others, that are not hand drawn.

Benettoons may be able to help you as he dabbles in making such covers himself.

Hi Istanbul Michael. Happy

Already did that; I do find some FDC similar to these, but it is the cachets that are hard to find.

My first two search options are always Wikipedia and eBay for quick identification, then Google Images, then Google Search. Nothing has shown similar cachets as the first set.

Can't help you with the values, but I did find your 2008 Doris Gold cachets (click on link).

Her ID numbers are DGX #173 for the Rawlings stamp and DGX #177 for the Davis stamp.

I need to go heat my lunch. I'll see if I can find the other cachets later if nobody else chimes in.

re: How do you appraise the value of cacheted covers?

I find going to James McCusker's website the best way to figure out retail value for FDC's I'm not familiar with.

http://www.jamesmccusker.com/shopping/

I put in a key word, either the Scott Catlogue number or the Cachet Maker. I usually find what I'm looking for.

If searching by Catalogue Number I try to find the exact or very similar cover (unless unique). If I can't find the exact cover I then search by Cachetmaker and try to find items that were created around the same time period.

Bob

re: How do you appraise the value of cacheted covers?

A little late, but here is my educated opinion:

#1 Bette Davis; Doris Gold; $12-$18
#2 Gerty Cori: Is this a 3-D cachet? 3-DLAZ?
#3 Rawlings; Doris Gold: $12-$18
#4 Bette Davis; Cachetmaker?; Maybe $3-4
#5 Gerty Cori; AAL; $2-$4
#6 Rawlings; MPG Cachets; $3-4

Doris Gold's website: http://dorisgold.com/DGFDC/CachetPrices
She is sold-out of Bette Davis.

Thanks FDCUSA; I posted them for auction at eBay and most Bette Davis covers went for less than $1; very few bids.

Phil, your point was made; not a wet blanket but a reality of sales.
