The point about new members finding it hard to know who you are responding to when you just refer to "Bob" in your posting, has been brought up a number of times. To try to help new members navigate our long discussion threads, I have added a new feature. Roll your mouse over the poster's avatar (image on the left of a post) and leave it there for a second. The posters Nick Name or Given Name will pop up. If you don't want your Given Name to popup in this situation, put something in your Nick Name and it will pop up instead.

I have tested this feature in Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari browsers. I don't have the ability to test using Microsoft Internet Explorer. If anyone has a problem with it in Microsoft Internet Explorer, please let me know.

Regards ... Tim.

Tim, great addition!! I tested it with IE (which I rarely ever use). It works with that browser too.

Oh boy, Michael, where did you find that picture. We had alot of fun over that years ago when StampWants was a fun place to be. That was priceless just in the fun that seller generated over his "unique" item.

Roy, it is just like Michael (Mdroth) said. A piece of paper adhesion on the back of a US revenue stamp that some nutjob on eBay was trying to pass off as "unique" and sell it for millions of dollars.

The seller claimed it was "unique", because no other stamp had that piece of paper adhesion on it. If you follow that same logic, all used stamps are unique, because no two stamps will have the same cancellation on them. Of course if that were true, all of our collections would be worthless fortunes.

re: Help for New Members in identifying referred to posts

Tim,

Thanks for creating such a neat feature. It will be nice to be able to identify people without having to leave the page; but for me, it is still a bit uncomfortable to call someone by his/her first name when I have never met him/her.

It's all about respect and how difficult it can be when all communication is simply via computer. Having corresponded with some on SOR, it is easy to address them by first name. Others it is easier to use their "username" because that is their "public" face.

I can see how someone new would be a bit intimidated by those who use first names when it isn't the easiest thing to figure out who is who. I wasn't offended by any of it when I joined because this is my first and only stamp club/group online and I didn't have any expectations.

There has been a lot written here about how welcoming or unwelcoming SOR is. I think this feature should be proof positive that those on SOR go out of their way to try to make newcomers feel welcome and included. I appreciate the efforts of everyone on SOR who makes it a great place to be!
