I have noticed as of late a tendency to activate books with Worldwide categories. It is not helpful. Why not say stamps, it is the same!!! The original Approval Book rules banned Worldwide categories for a cause. We may have relaxed it with higher values stamps, although I don't see a reason, but for other books, I find it less than helpful.
Personally I don't even open them.

re: Worldwide category is not helpful

There are currently 26 Worldwide Approval Books out of a total of 536 Approval Books.

11 of which are large or high value books.

As our Australian cousins say "No Worries".

re: Worldwide category is not helpful

Currently with the auctions, the Auctioneers help sellers by fixing listing errors like the title, country, category, etc. Up until now, we do not have that ability in the approval books.

However, that enhancement is coming soon from our Web Master. So, we will be able to help sellers with approval books in the near future.

Of course, that also helps buyers find the material they are looking for as well.

Please remember that the members here cover many, many, many aspects of stamp collecting. From those that are experts in their fields looking for a single specific item to those on a very, very, very limited budget and are looking to collect many stamps from many countries at a reasonable cost.

Please be tolerant and allow ALL members to collect the way they want and whatever you do please do not try to force your own individual specific demands upon others.

One persons "rubbish" is another persons "gold".

Where there's "muck" there's "brass".

re: Worldwide category is not helpful

Ian, the reason we have an organized system with defined categories is to HELP collectors in their hobby. That is why we disallowed the World category, and I still think it is a mistake to allow it, except in very specific cases (for example Number one stamps from all countries..etc..)

Again, I think Worldwide should not be allowed. Would you list your stamps on auction by calling them stamp and not assigning the descriptive country, year, cat # or whatever info that allows buyers to find them? Imagine every Approval book being labeled, Stamps.

Ralph, the decision was made by the Management Team to permit the worldwide category. It serves a need. It does no good to stir up the dust. The decision was made. If you don't want to look at approval books in that category, then do not look at book in that category.

re: Worldwide category is not helpful

Truthfully, until I saw this thread - I did not realize that the worldwide category was this wide open. For all this time I have been avoiding certain countries because I have less than 100 stamps to make up a book. Did not know I could have 33 stamps from country X in the Americas, 33 from country y in Europe and 34 from country z in Africa - all in one book and say it is worldwide. (or even worse 1 stamp from 100 different countries). Personally, I do not like it.. I thought it was set up for things like topical approval books (like olympics, animals, transportation, flowers, etc) that crossed the world. I did not know it was more of a free for all. Especially for the new high dollar books - I could create lots of books that are a hodge podge of 20 miscellaneous stamps and throw them in a book ! Steve

re: Worldwide category is not helpful

I am in agreement with Ralph on this.

I almost never look at books in the Worldwide category,
as they are too all over the place.

I only look there if I find nothing anywhere else and am bored.

It always appears to be a jumbled up mish-mash that is VERY hard to navigate.

I LIKE the world wide category as it most closely approximates my collecting choices! But it would be nice if the stamps had indications of whether they are mint or not and the year of issue! The pictures are just not high enough resolution to tell whether stamps are mint or not. Sad

Jerrel, I too collect worldwide, but I just cannot make any use of it.
I am not going to comment further on this. I said, with restraint, what I think about it!

Not quite. The use of the World Wide category is addressed in the Approval Book rules:

B2. All items in any approval book must be directly related to philately and be in the chosen approval book category. World-wide and other non-listed categories must be posted in the "World Wide" category, and must be neatly arranged by country and/or topic.

We have closed several World Wide approval books that looked like they were just tossed together from stamps picked up off the floor.

re: Worldwide category is not helpful

Michael,

Thanks for that clarification. I must have looked at some of the books you closed because that was what I was seeing. I never looked at books in that category until yesterday - so it was just shocking to me - so that is where my comment came from. Steve
